It's obviously going to be very hard to convict if the main witness/victim withdraws her statement/complaint.
Domestic abuse is a complex matter. It doesn't necessarily end when people get back together. There's plenty of examples where people keep going back yo their abusive partner because they're scared of what will happen if they actually leave.
