Have we not reached the point where we all realise people who say 'woke' are genuinely beIlends?

If he gets a ban I think he and the club should just accept it, make a statement on how keen they are to stamp out racism in all forms (whilst stating Garnacho was perhaps naive rather than racist) and leave it at that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Bernardo Silva got a one match ban for pretty much the same thing. I don't think either player is racist, but a one match ban isn't worth worrying about.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, both just a bit silly and not really malicious IMO.

Much like someone being sent off for a handball on the line. Just take your medicine.

If a suspension sends out a message that it's not OK to use these tropes then the sooner they go IMO.

In an ideal world no one would take offence of course but we're not living in an ideal world.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Not sure you can compare committing a handball with racially abusing someone.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I used handball as that doesn't hurt anyone really whereas a dangerous tackle could.

It's all about context which is why I don't think Garnacho meant to be racist. He shouldn't have posted it though knowing what connotations it does have.

Jesus

Just so I'm clear, you've written, to the world, that only people who are racist would find a racist trope racist.
That's what you're saying

I'm absolutely certain that black people find racist tropes, racist.

You really are a fvck knuckle of quite epic proportions.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Iv no doubt they find racism offensive, but doubt they given any credit to the equating of black people with monkeys.

I know. But how do the club educate the lad ?

Alejandro. You can't use monkey emojis towards Black people, because racist idiots think black people look like monkeys, even though no right minded person agrees.

If he gets punished in any way for this then the world has gone mad. I mean, it’s gone mad anyway but it would just be further proof.

It is what it is.

I'll tell you what else it is, or was, and that wholly avoidable.

I’m gonna start calling my black friends spear chuckers. It’ll be alright though because only racists actually think the chuck spears.

I don't have any black friends. In fact I can go for weeks without seeing non-white people round here. Even then though I don't think Gorilla when I see them.

This is a public post. Any person of colour who has been called a gorilla, or had a banana thrown at them, or had monkey noises made at them to suggest they are less than human can see this and then see people claiming its OK to compare black people to gorillas now has every right to be upset or offended because it legitimises the view and gives confidence to racists to carry on doing it.

Slavery in the US was often attempted to be justified under they idea that black people were physically strong specimens who didn't have the same human level of intelligence as white folk and so keeping them was akin to keeping a pet or a working farm animal. They were often compared to gorillas and other animals as part of this dehumanisation.

That is why it shouldn't be accepted, even if the post in question was probably not intended to be racist.

It makes sense that action must be taken IMO, as they will want to send out a message, but whatever action they take they must bare in mind that there was probably no malicious intention.

It’s a term of endearment. We often send emoji’s to each other. I don’t hear any complaints about the pie i send to Luke, or the donkey emoji I send to Harry. Even the gaffa was ok with the Xbox one after the Sancho stuff.

The guy just doesnt get it. Why are the club not training these young idiots in appropriate behaviour on public forums? where intent and context can be lost, and to be fair, if one is having to explain context/intent to people then perhaps it is not appropriate for a public forum. If you want to support your team mate, Whatsapp or something, send him all the gorilla emojis you want, but do it publically and you will get all that you deserve.

I know what you mean, and don't disagree in the essence of it, but I'd just like to point out that the history of the U.S. should not be the yardstick against which to measure the rest of the world's racial attitudes.
