@agarnacho7
It’s a term of endearment. We often send emoji’s to each other. I don’t hear any complaints about the pie i send to Luke, or the donkey emoji I send to Harry. Even the gaffa was ok with the Xbox one after the Sancho stuff.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The guy just doesnt get it. Why are the club not training these young idiots in appropriate behaviour on public forums? where intent and context can be lost, and to be fair, if one is having to explain context/intent to people then perhaps it is not appropriate for a public forum. If you want to support your team mate, Whatsapp or something, send him all the gorilla emojis you want, but do it publically and you will get all that you deserve.

I don't have any black friends. In fact I can go for weeks without seeing non-white people round here. Even then though I don't think Gorilla when I see them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Where do you live Diafol?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Conwy area. Actually, I'm much more likely to see a real life Gorilla seeing as how the zoo round here is around 300m away from my house!

Can't believe people fell for that one!

What a sorry state the world is in when an emoji is deemed racist. A gorilla for strength a cheetah for speed, I don't even get the donkey one. Is McGuire really stubborn?

posted on 27/10/23

Surely intent to hurt his to be the basis of racism.
A three year old can say anything, no intent.
I don't believe Garnacho intended offence.

posted on 27/10/23

The offence here appears to be that he has posted something that SOME people COULD interpret to be racist, despite his insistence it is not.

I’m gonna start calling my black friends spear chuckers. It’ll be alright though because only racists actually think the chuck spears.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Try and post it on social media as that way it won’t be racist

Garnacho doesn't mean it offensively.

Onana doesnt taken it to be malicious.

Who is the offended / hurt party?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a public post. Any person of colour who has been called a gorilla, or had a banana thrown at them, or had monkey noises made at them to suggest they are less than human can see this and then see people claiming its OK to compare black people to gorillas now has every right to be upset or offended because it legitimises the view and gives confidence to racists to carry on doing it.

Slavery in the US was often attempted to be justified under they idea that black people were physically strong specimens who didn't have the same human level of intelligence as white folk and so keeping them was akin to keeping a pet or a working farm animal. They were often compared to gorillas and other animals as part of this dehumanisation.

That is why it shouldn't be accepted, even if the post in question was probably not intended to be racist.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I know what you mean, and don't disagree in the essence of it, but I'd just like to point out that the history of the U.S. should not be the yardstick against which to measure the rest of the world's racial attitudes.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

It isn't just the history of the US though. The British were very much part of US Slavery, delivering many of the captured slaves to the Americas and benefitting financially from the Slavery that took place.

In more recent history the "no blacks" sentiment and the chants, bananas and monkey noises at sporting events were very much prominent here as well. That's before considering the recent internal investigation that concluded that the Met was institutionally racist and this was reflected in how they treat black people.

Just because we weren't as bad as the US for as long doesn't mean the attitudes aren't still here.

Is the person it's been sent to offended? No. Is it possible that some people may be offended who have seen it? It seems so, so simply remove it.
Does it require a severe punishment? No - context is required.
Have a word in Garnacho's ear by all means.
And then just leave it at that, and focus on serious racist incidents.

It was a dumb choice of ways to express himself.

However, it's probably not really worthwhile trying to explain to anyone, that would make such a dumb choice, why that would be the case.

If he can clearly show that he GENUINELY understands that, then it could be pointed that he has shown he has learnt from getting it wrong. But that's quite a big "IF".

As I said, I do not disagree with the essence of your post, just questioning the notion that everyone else should blindly accept the historical yardstick set in a different cultural setting.

It was not said with regard to this specific case, but more generally, and by 'the rest of the world' I was not thinking about the UK in particular, but the actual 'rest of the world'.

But the rest of the world is mostly irrelevant to the discussion since this is an incident in the UK which is whybwe are talking about it.

Remember when racism was actually taken seriously. Nonsense like this is just doing more damage than good ffs.

posted on 27/10/23

We are talking about it because famous people are involved. This sort of thing or something analogous to it isn't as rare as you might think. At least in my experience.
