Pi.sss off
The Qatar world cup was by far the best organised and most entertaining.
Im sure the Saudi one will be similar
----------------------------------------------------------------------

‘By far’

No. It was decent enough and the final was great but did it really do anything for Qatari football or the culture itself? No drinking at games really doesn’t lead itself to a good time for fans. An Australian World Cup would be such a bigger event for the country than a Saudi one.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The success of Qatar was that all the matches were close by so it would allow someone to watch a few matches in a day. The lack of drinking turned out to be a benefit rather than a detriment to the tournament. Less drunk people meant less trouble and more people of different nationalities and fans of different nations getting along.

A hard no from me. I don't think a winter works cup helped football one iota.

Just a joke. Average attendances in SA can't even compete with League 1 attendances. There just isn't the interest there to create a decent atmosphere. And the draconian laws only add to that. As Robb said, it'll be another soulless affair.

Of course it hasn’t. FIFA are a mess.

Imagine how much the Saudis will ramp up their efforts in domestic football now that they have a world cup to build up to. Sportswashing at its finest. They will want to have all of the best players in the world playing there by then and money talks. Maybe a tipping point of 2030 where there are more top class players playing in Saudi than at Europe's top clubs?

Do you think they'll grow or stay the same? Can you tell me what laws prevent ot hinder the attendance number at the games?

The reason why I ask this is that Japan and Korea have larger attendance than they did 30 years ago. The game had to grow and one of the things was to get in generally big names, though past their best. The MSL has grown quite a bit since Beckham first arrived.

If Saudi do want to grow their league, they should be looking at Korea and Japan and the MSL and hope to avoid pitfalls made by the Chinese league.

Another downside. But as long as the FIFA lot are lining their pockets who cares about the real football fans?

In terms of how smoothly everything goes, it will be as good as Qatar if not better.

A potential compromise may be that the PL let the Saudis own more than one PL club, in an attempt to stop them from taking players over to Saudi teams. The Saudis want to dominate football. The PL is fueled by greed and money. They offer eachother what they both want.

Don't think the "pitfalls" of the Chinese league really apply elsewhere. Their government hated seeing money go out the country so stopped the import of big money signings.

There were other pitfalls as well. Signings such as Tevez to the league didn't do anything and then the government interference (not just with the money going out but other "anti-coruption" issues ).

I read that attendances in the Saudi league are worse than reported. Apparently, of the 893 who turned up to one match, a sizeable number didn't return to their seats after the half-time public beheading of a suspected homosexual.

Maybe they should switch to doing a head count instead of just how many bodies are there. Might be more accurate.

The fact it cost about 80bn more than any other world cup purely down to them having no infrastructure whatsoever and they even needed to upgrade everything to roads and the airport?

The fact it was won by bribes?

Migrant deaths who built the stadia?

Played in the winter?

Other than that yeah it was no different at all. 🙃

Not to nitpick but the infrastructure will be used and around for a long time after the games. If anything, that would be one of the plus sides of Qatar hosting the games.

The issue with the bribe aspect was that everyone was doing back handers, not just the Qataris. If it weren't for Qatar getting it and upsetting a lot of others (for instance the FA being one even though they offered other gifts) would have never brought the corruption to the fore. So while the bribing was bad, in hindsight itnhelped get rid of Blatter and exposed the level of corruption that was present in FIFA.

Migrant deaths and also the treatment of migrants (people are hung up on the number branded about but forget the poor treatment of the migrants) is and was appalling. This is the biggest black mark against them and makes complaints about it being in the winter insignificant.

Regarding it being in the winter, one could argue for it to be a truly world tournament it needs to take into fact that other nations would find it impossible to host it in the summer and should not be excluded on the basis of that. FIFA have to represent the world. Not just European sides or the big Leagues.

posted on 31/10/23

Which countries would find it impossible to hold in the summer? South Africa nanaged just fine.

I mean it's a winter sport for starters but does anyone get upset that Qatar can't hold a winter Olympics? No.

There is very little positive at all about holding it in Qatar or SA and a long, long, list of negatives.

At the end if the day, is it actually good for world football? I'm going to say no.
