A national stadium in the North

There is no way the FA will look to farm out matches away from their cashcow. If they do it will be the provincial stuff not the big games / finals / semis etc

That said United need to do something. Its embarrassing that Everton, Newcastle, City have been chosen for Euro 28 over Old Trafford

All things being equal, I'd rather have an incredible expansion and renovation of the original stadium that retains its character and history while modernising it in an imaginative way. Manchester is full of factories and warehouses from the industrial era that have had new life breathed into them - I'd love to see an Old Trafford that's both historical monument and cutting edge.

But I also realise there's a lot of caveats in that 'all things being equal'. It all comes down to feasibility within a workable business model, and it could be that updating and expanding OT ultimately isn't as viable as starting from scratch. If we do go for the latter, I hope the architects come up with something distinctive and sensitive to the heritage of the club and city, not just another sleek bowl.

They weren’t chosen over Old Trafford. Old Trafford was withdrawn due to uncertainty over redevelopment plans.

Anyone who thinks going to Old Trafford is an amazing experience either haven't been for 20 years, have never been at all or have been a guest in corporate.

It was withdrawn because it is of public toilet quality, but spun as being "not guaranteed as available"

For viability, Man Utd really could do with expanding the stadium quite substantially.

Emirates added 50% more seats, Spurs increased capacity by about 70% and both put up prices quite a bit.

The return on the investment would be interesting to see, especially as an 'outside of London' venue.

If you were to rebuild, where would you play for 2 or 3 seasons? or would you relocate altogether ?

From my recollection, its pretty central and their aint much in the way of available land in the immediate area. Will probably take quite a while to piece together some ownerships if you are looking to move.

If work begins today on making this happen, I would not expect opening much before 2030.

As a season ticket holder it always seems amazing to me with 73.000 people in it, a real historic stadium not a freebee council house.

Really, 3 sides of the Swamp have been redeveloped over the years with the help of public money and Chemical Jim was talking about using more taxpayers money to redevelop it only last week.

I'd welcome a new stadium, but only if it was 'our' stadium, and not some Wembley II that we use.

I think one of the main issues fans have is that Old Trafford has so much history so we would be losing a lot. I saw above that there was a Spurs fan talking about the redevelopment but this is so much different to the Spurs stadium redevelopment.

United have won countless trophies whilst at our current ground and when we go there we remember all of these great times. It wouldn't be long before we created new winning memories at our new ground obviously but the Spurs comparison is not valid.

Whilst Spurs were at their former stadium since it was completed in 1998, they only won the Carling Cup and that was essentially cos none of the big clubs wanted to win it, so what memories did that ground really hold for them? Each time the fans entered the stadium what did they remember? "Oh I remember that draw that got us mid table". Hardly worth keeping, so it was very easy just to knock down that stadium with its zero memories or success that it held for the club.

The new stadium, again, they have won nothing so they aren't creating any memories.

It is therefore very difficult to compare knocking down a world class stadium full of historic success like Old Trafford and replacing it with another world class stadium full of future success, to a run down White Hart Lane where there were no memories, to replacing it with a soulless modern stadium that holds no current or future glory or joy for the Spurs fans.

It is VERY different.

I hope any new stadium would retain the current stand names, and the various memorials / tributes around the ground.

I think that the cost of fully renovating OT to a top tier standard versus doing a new build in the car park may swing it in the latter direction.

Nothing wrong with where I am tbf. The view is great too.

The ground has seen it's best days though. It's time to build the best one in the land again.

It's usually been the biggest, never the best though.

Only the Anfield Rd stand was worse from an away fans perspective and apparently that's been redeveloped now.

Ratty Ratcliffe will be hoping for another Tory gov at the end of the year so his chums can bung some money his way and pretend it is for 'The North' so that Burnham can't dis it.

Burnham will just point out that it's a Tax Exile with the begging bowl out just wanting to increase the value of his shares without spending his own money.

I don't know about that. Soon after the North Stand went up it was definitely the best stadium in the land. Old Wembley was still a thing then and was crumbling.

I'm not sentimental about keeping the same stadium afterall hardly any of it is the original build now anyway. I just want the name to remain.

Brand new state of the art 90k stadium will do nicely.

Jim Ratcliffe on the case for state funding of a rebuilt Old Trafford: ‘

The people in the north pay their taxes like the people in the south pay their taxes, but where’s the national stadium for football? It’s in the south.

‘Where’s the national stadium for rugby? It’s in the south. Where’s the national stadium for tennis? It’s in the south. Where’s the national concert stadium? It’s the O2, it’s in the south. Where’s the Olympic Village? It’s in the south.

‘All of this talk about levelling up and the Northern Powerhouse. Where is the stadium in the north? How many Champions Leagues has the north-west won and how many Champions Leagues has London won?

‘The answer to that is the north-west has won 10 – Liverpool have won more than us – and London has won two. Where do you have to go if you get to the semi-final of the FA Cup and you’re a northern club? You have to schlepp down to London, don’t you?

‘So what happened to HS2, which was going to be a substantial amount of investment in the north, what happened to that? They cancelled that. And where are they going to spend that? They’re going to spend it on the rail network in London.

‘People in the north pay their taxes and there is an argument you could think about a more ambitious project in the north which would be fitting for England, for the Champions League final or the FA Cup final and acted as a catalyst to regenerate southern Manchester.’

Wow, the biggest tax dodger in this country is wanting the state to pay for a brand new stadium. How ironic.
