It's a constituent country of the United Kingdom of Great Britain. Doesn't mean England does not exist you wally, it does. And members of the country are both English and British.

England, Scotland and Wales are nations. The UK is a sovereign state, but whether it can accurately be called a 'nation' is a contentious question. 'Nation' is sometimes used as a synonym for 'country' but it's generally understood that it stands for a defined geographical or cultural entity, which doesn't necessarily exercise sovereignty. So we can talk about the Basque nation or Kurdish nation. Throughout history such entities sometimes gain and lose sovereignty - wouldn't it be absurd to suggest that they are a nation one minute and not the next, based on geopolitical changes? Would we say that Lithuania stopped being a nation when it was occupied by the Soviet Union, and then became one again when it gained independence? Scotland never ceased to be a nation after the Act of Union, and indeed retained its distinct legal system.

As for this:

...you're couching this in terms of feeling sorry for the ancestral countries missing out on talent, but phrases like "a host of Albanians and Turks" do give the impression that you think of nationality as an ethnic rather than civic thing, and therefore that the likes of Xhaka and Shaqiri "aren't really Swiss" or Gundogan and Ozil "aren't really German".
