Not read the replies but I don’t think Torres was overrated at all. He had a few years where he was almost unplayable and in the conversation for the best number 9 in the world. I mean if it’s based on longevity then shall we throw in Ronaldinho? I wouldn’t.

The answer is Cantona

If you think Scholes was overrated then you have some serious issues with understanding football imo.

Or maybe you just never watched United live.

An exceptional player. One of United’s best ever.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Scholes was highly rated by Utd fans, coaches (both Utd and England) and by his peers. In general underrated by most fans, rarely overrated unless people are on the WUM.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He was and for good reason. I think people are talking about after he retired when he went up several levels year after year.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Playing for England didn't work for him. Having Gerrard and Lampard in their prime and almost ahead of him didn't help in the central midfield berth. I think England failed to utilise all three effectively tbh.

Scholes is one of those players that soooooooooo many people tell you that he's "underrated" that he actually became overrated. Everybody rates Scholes very highly. He was outstanding. Many Man U fans want him to be pretty much recognized as some kind of Zidane-level player who was leagues ahead of Gerrard and Lampard when he wasn't anything close to that. If I were a Liverpool fan, I'd never swap Gerrard for Scholes.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

And I’d never swap Scholes for Gerrard.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

That's fine. As a neutral, I can imagine Gerrard replacing Scholes in Man U's most successful sides and there being hardly any difference to Man U's level. I can't imagine Scholes dragging Liverpool the way Gerrard often did. Every England manager also seemed to prefer Gerrard.

In hindsight the way Lampard, Gerrard and Scholes was managed is kinda baffling but I guess the 4-2-3-1 that could have accommodated them all wasn't so popular then?

He didn’t drag Liverpool anywhere. He merely helped to make up for some of his own flaws, until a decent manager stepped in and moved him to a different position.

Maybe they did, maybe they didn't - either way it is just one stat in a sea of stats of limited use when you can see the attributes that are not stat'd in front of your eyes. Neither were overrated.

Some of the things he could do was only appreciated by Utd fans and his peers. He was never overrated, those who knew and understood the game knew what a talent he was. He was our closest thing to Iniesta or Xavi and that was remarked by Pep at the time following Barca's defeat to Utd at OT through a scholes thunderbolt.

I'm biased but even if he played for an opposition I would pick him over Gerrard and Lampard all day long. My all time favourite Utd player.

Let's be honest, if players like Scholes or Gerrard are being called "overrated" it's more through tribalism than anything else. They were rated so highly because they were exceptional players throughout their careers.

I don't actually think there are many players who are overrated, as if a player isn't performing at the level their reputation dictates, their own fans will be the first to notice this and consequently they will no longer be rated higher than they should be.

Always thought Joe Hart was overrated when City started winning things, he was an obvious weak link. But it's Joe Hart FFS, that's how much I'm struggling 😅

----------------------------------------------------------------------

He didn't fail in a 4-man midfield at Liverpool. Liverpool simply didn't the squad to really win through most of Gerrard's prime years. That 2005 CL win with all the Djimi Traores in their squad is one of the miracles of English football. Scholes played with the best players in PL history. I don't think Scholes ever even won Man U's player of the year. Gerrard was several times for Liverpool because of how he carried mediocrity around him. Gerrard was also a PFA and English writers player of the year. Scholes never was despite everyone now claiming to love him more than anyone ever. Gerrard made PFA team of the year 8 times. Scholes twice. English national team managers wanted to build the team around Gerrard, not Scholes. So yeah, Gerrard has plenty of substantive claims to being the better player.

Did it though? He hasn't been cancelled by anyone.

His daughter was wrong to post it and Paul was wrong to even do what he did. It was gross. Sad that people remember that more than the contribution he made to football in a glittering career. Says a lot about some "fans".
