I don’t remember him back then as I was a bit too young but I do have vague memories of the 98 World Cup and stronger memories of 2002. He was a hell of a player.

van Basten and Ronaldo were elite, both cut down in their primes by injuries sadly but still produced great numbers in an era where defensive football was strong (still had the old offside rule of 3 players between striker and goal, the backpass rule that killed games etc).
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Both these rules are relevant to Van Basten but not to Ronaldo, they changed when he was 14 and 16.

Drogba.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don’t necessarily disagree. Excellent big game player but plenty of pretty average seasons also.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Think drogbas becoming underrated. Not only is his goals to minutes very impressive regardless, but the guy was a back to goal striker for the most part.
If you think Scholes was overrated then you have some serious issues with understanding football imo.
Or maybe you just never watched United live.

Does the original Ronaldo get overrated? I love him but the way people talk about him sometimes suggests he'd be beating Messi and Ronaldo numbers if he stayed fit, when realistically he never did that anyway

I’m pretty sure he was on course to do so. Could be wrong. But no ronaldo is still the best out and out striker I’ve ever seen in my lifetime

Irish and August here too
It’s because Mama Deej only gives it up in December
Torres is a strange shout for most overrated player, that's for sure.
Going by this forum I'd put Le Tissier high up the list. A skillful player no doubt but certainly nowhere near where some put him.

He was and for good reason. I think people are talking about after he retired when he went up several levels year after year.
This is a pointless thread really, as opinions on players would always wildly diverge with every fan. Some players I find overrated are players I rate very highly, but STILL think many ridiculously overhype them. Scholes is my number one. It's not as bad as it used to be but the amount of guff I used to hear from Man U fans about him about a decade ago was deeply irritating - especially when they act like he was somehow leagues above Gerrard and Lampard. Modric is my number one in modern football. Great balance and lovely technique, but far too much credit for too little.
The first comment on this thread mentions Fabregas for example - a forgotten player who hardly anyone talks about (meaning he's actually underrated) - but who I wouldn't have swapped for anyone in his position in his Arsenal prime. There is no reconciling wildly diverging opinion like that. You can call just about anyone up to Messi "overrated" for whatever reason.

Scholes is one of those players that soooooooooo many people tell you that he's "underrated" that he actually became overrated. Everybody rates Scholes very highly. He was outstanding. Many Man U fans want him to be pretty much recognized as some kind of Zidane-level player who was leagues ahead of Gerrard and Lampard when he wasn't anything close to that. If I were a Liverpool fan, I'd never swap Gerrard for Scholes.
