Harry kane has never been better than owen

Eh, what now??

You on crack Spyro? I don't like Kane but he is light years ahead of Owen ffs and arguably the best British player for decades.

No doubt Owen was better internationally (not that that has ever been a barometer for the quality of a player IMO) but I'd say Fowler was a lot better in European football even if it was mainly the lesser competitions. Don't remember Owen doing much in the CL other than the hatrick for us in a group match.

Owen was a far better striker than Fowler. Don’t understand how anyone thinks otherwise. Mostly just biased, bitter Liverpool fans who push that narrative.

Different opinions it seems? Imo for what it's worth Fowler was the superior player and the team I'd have chosen between the tie

Owen was a great player just not as good as Fowler

Don't you think maybe the fans of the club both players played for the most would have a good idea on who was better? His club career post Liverpool was pretty rubbish.

He was underrated for us. Also good at Newcastle but injuries stopped him.

Other than beating Owens best ever season 6 times and matching it one more time.

Scoring more goals at international level.

Yeah, other than that

And another vote for Fowler, much better all around player than Owen.

He wasn't underrated for us, he had a couple standout moments but in the main was a pretty average back up (on I imagine pretty high wages).

Both Owen and Flower's club careers are defined by what they did at Liverpool, both of their careers took a big dip after that bar the odd season. Fowler was simply are far more rounded player who was technically superior and could occasionaly do stuff like this that Owen could never do.

He’s got a better record in Europe than Fowler and international football when Owen played was a higher stands than the premier league in the 90s.

LOL

SK Brann??

I think even Manucho would’ve looked good against them.

Fowler was class but Owen was elite.

At one point in time, every side in the world would’ve had Michael Owen.

Never, at any point in time, would every team in the world have wanted Fowler.

As was the standard of the premier league and La Liga by the time Owen was finished after 2006.

Off the top of my head, all these are better than him without doubt:

Henry
Suarez
Kane
Shearer
Aguero
Drogba
Rooney
Ronaldo

Probably others I have forgotten, and that doesn’t even consider the arguments that could made for the likes of RVP, Tevez, Anelka, etc

“Owen played was a higher stands than the premier league in the 90s”

They played the majority of their football at Liverpool at the same time. 93-02 for Fowler and 96-04 for Owen. Owen after Liverpool in the PL wasn’t particularly good, I’d argue Fowlers first season at Leeds was better than anything Owen did at Newcastle. The period where Owen played in a superior PL was when he was a sub for us.

But Owen was one of Europe’s most feared strikers in the 00s, Fowler wasn’t - Fowler’s best years were in the early 90s when the standard wasn’t the same as the early 00s.

Fowler had more to his game, but just wasn’t playing at the same level as Owen did when they had their best years.

Put it this way, Fowler barely had an England career because of Wright, Ferdinand, Shearer, Sheringham and Cole. Owen retired them all, including Fowler.

Certainly cannot disagree with any on that list not being better than Owen?

To.be fair all of them were magnificent and in so many differing ways, there is also overlap with a good few of their skill sets as well, seeing that list also makes me feel Owen whilst superb at times, wasn't at their level, again imo only

Yes and he went to Real and was rubbish. I genuinely don’t think many Liverpool fans would pick Owen over Fowler and as a United fan I was always worried about Fowler(far more so than Owen) because he did more than just score.

Ian Wright

Wright and Ferdinand (as well as Cole) didn’t have much of an England career either. The main strikers during Fowler’s peak years were Shearer and Sheringham who had a brilliant partnership and Shearer was better (and better than peak Owen). Owen came in and took over when Shearer was nearing the end of his career.

Don’t think anyone would argue who had the better international career but that was due largely to the competition they faced. For Liverpool Fowler was the more dangerous player.

posted on 26/3/24

Shearer retired because of Owen, he didn’t retire for another for another six years club football.

posted on 26/3/24

You can’t just talk about the competition when Fowler, Shearer, Sheringham, Cole and Wright were still Owen’s competition in 98 when Owen kicked them all out of the team and became England’s best striker ahead of Shearer.
