He played well and won motm, he’s given himself a really good chance of going to the Euros with his performance. Though I would have liked to have seen him and Rice playing in a more disciplined midfield set up, I thought we’ve been too open with the way the midfield has been in these two friendlies and against better teams we’d get really punished.

I think we were the better side yesterday, but a distance in fact. Their goals came from individual errors between Dunk & Pickford, and at this level you get punished.

I have no issue with how we setup, we created more and we looked pretty comfortable for the most part.

If Foden and Bellingham had on their shooting boots we could've scored 4 or 5.

who was it saying he's not ready for international football?

.................

Me. I still don't think he is.

He was genuinely outstanding. Reminds me of Pirlo in the defensive third, but then past that he's like Iniesta.

Yes I am serious. His close control and agility is freakish like Iniesta's was.

For all the hype Bellingham gets, I am not sure Jude is as complete a CM as our Mainoo.

If we take Rice, Henderson, Gallagher and Phillips as the CM options then we have no hope.

We gifted 2 goals yesterday with mistakes. We were a bit open but lacked Walkers covering pace. But dominated all the important stats. I felt we were a much better attacking force, had better movement and options off Toney and were more fluid. Mainoo contributed to this and used the ball much better than Gallagher, who seemed to really struggle to do anything more than the simple when under the Brazil press.

I compare it to Sarr and Hojbjerg at Spurs. The latter an experienced international selected without fail by Conte and Jose . Sarr started the season as a 20 yo with a handful of appearances and is now viewed as one of our key players in CM. Common sense might say, in the big games bring in the old head who can still do a very decent job, but Sarr's all round game and ability is much greater and you only gain that experience by playing.

United wouldnt drop Mainoo for a big game, I don't think England should be scared of throwing him in, especially when the other options are pretty uninspiring.

Brilliant

Think he's definitely played himself into the squad now though. Really like that midfiled of Rice, Maino, Bellingham with Saka and Foden either side.

People think I’m being OTT but there’s no way Bellingham has the same ability to take the ball on a half turn in the defensive third the way Mainoo does.

Nor is Bellingham as agile and good with close control

I'm curious whether you watched Mainoo vs Belgium, VC? He looked very assured. I guess the pressure of international football can be more about the glare of publicity and expectation than the actual sporting challenge (where matches are usually slower; most matches the quality is lower than good PL or CL sides). The psychological burden can crush players. But the same can be said of Manchester United as opposed to a lot of other clubs, and Mainoo so far looks supremely comfortable with that pressure.

How is he not ready for international football? Haven’t we seen quite often young kids with little experience take to international football pretty easily? The standard of international football doesn’t compare to the top level of club football and you could argue his technical strengths and ability on the ball suit the slower pace of international games. Of course he’ll continue to improve because he’s so young but this applies to club and international football. I dont see any other England player who has the skill set he does in the middle and his qualities compliment Rice very well so in that respect he’s more ready than others.

Wummery. Mainoo isn’t a patch on bellingham, not even remotely close, much more limited skill set and as for iniesta, that’s like comparing peps Barcelona to Wrexham, he hasn’t a fraction of iniesta’s talent. Hope he’s left out of the euro’s, I wouldn’t want any negativity to affect his development

Reckon he could do a job, it’s more that as his age when the press start circling after England exit it may affect him

Good debut for the lad but the commentators were banging on like he was a 12 year old playing like prime Messi

He may never reach anything like Iniesta’s level who let’s be fair despite being brilliant himself had some of the best teammates ever for both club and country but to say Mainoo doesn’t have a fraction of the talent despite arguably being ahead of Iniesta at 18 is a crazy statement.

No, but I don’t see the raw material. Where’s the vision and intelligence? Great at getting out of a tight spot, but lacks a lot of iniesta’s skill set. Ofcourse we may not have seen it (hope so) but l don’t think it’s there

Very few do or will.

That doesn’t mean he can’t reach the levels of say Seedorf, whom he shares a lot of similarities with. That would be a very good player for Utd and England to utilise.

I think Mainoo also makes us harder to press, he looks forward whenever he can and if sides decide to press us higher up the pitch it leaves space for our dangerous attackers and Gallagher/ Henderson/ Phillips simple won’t exploit that.

posted on 27/3/24

Mainoo is so press-resistant it's frightening. I bet there are all kinds of electrical malfunctions if he's ever stood near a trouser press for example

For a lad who's just 18 if you compare him to the likes of:

Curtis Jones
Rico Lewis
Bentancur
Szoboslai
Gallagher
Caicedo
Enzo Fernandez
Harvey Elliott

I'd argue he's better than all of them by quite some distance.

Mainoo is definitely not a generational player or the next Bellingham / Rooney. He's a good player whose made a good start to his career (very early days). Hopefully he has a long successful career and he isn't eaten up by media / social media hype
