Physically he isnt too bad. He had bad concussions that have scarred him mentally.
I actually think he's been a consistently excellent player for us overall, though as literally everyone on planet earth except the club knew when we signed him, he'd spend a lot of time in the treatment room.
A very classy defender - easily the closest defender of his type we've had to Rio - and I hope that we can profile a player who, like Varane, is quick, calm and reads the game well, but who can a) point to a track record of not being injured all the time and b) offer more in possession of the ball.
Based on hype and YouTube - reliable cornerstones of good recruitment for any self-respecting club - I'm plumping for Jean-Clair Todibo to be that man.

I think that very much depends on how much emphasis the manager lays on defenders being able to perform functions beyond stopping attacks. E.g. Guardiola could find plenty of players who are better than Stones as an out-and-out defender, including Varane, but he has been an important cog in City's wheel because he can pass the ball so well.
Quality player, injuries have not helped but a class defender. Evra was right, he was a Rio type defender.

It's quite ironic though that he's missed far fewer games than Martinez has in these two seasons they have been here together. If we get a repeat again next season with Licha then he will be sold next summer for sure.

Generally though, in the long term, you'd be less concerned about the longer, impact injuries that Martinez has suffered than the constant, niggling injuries that Varane has kept picking up (Licha's most recent calf injury aside).
I'd like to think Martinez's injuries are bad luck, but also think they might be a result of the combination of his very aggressive style, and the fact he's generally physically competing with bigger and stronger men. The injury he picked up against West Ham for example, I thought was pretty needless on his part - but you wouldn't take that out of him because it makes him the player he is. We've seen something similar with Eric Bailly before where he picked up a few injuries simply through being a facking idiot.
But yeah, next season is do or die for him. But I've said before I have doubts about whether a new manager would want to keep him as a CB anyway.

Let's hope the are bad luck and we get a full season out of him next year. I'm not too hopeful though given we've already had three long lay offs.
Nothing de-rails a season quite like having your best CB missing either. We've fallen foul to it and Liverpool have twice in the last 5 years as well.
I'd be a bit concerned though if the plan to replace Rafa is to chuck loads of Money at Branthwaite. He's still pretty unproven for one and he's also going to cost a lot of money as well. And where is the experience going to come from in the team?
Personally think we need to be signing a few CB's this summer. We can't afford a repeat of this season.

Ideally we would sign a couple of CBs, but i see us getting in one, with Martinez, Maguire, Evans and Kambwala staying. We need personnel, but also a more street-wise approach in terms of how we defend and attack as a team etc.
I think any new manager will make a great difference
Evans will be retiring after the cup final. That's the rumour I'm hearing anyway.
So it's probably going to be Martinez, New CB, Slab, Lindesoft and Kwambala next season.
Classy player
Classy man
Au revoir Raphael.
The right thing to do. Casemiro needs to go also.
I hope we now focus on players similar to Vidic, Evra, Hernandez - relatively unknown, small transfer fee, huge players in the end for us! Obviously won’t know for sure but good when it works out, better than big money flops!

The fact that RM were willing to let him go, it just didn't feel right at the time for me. Maybe it was just a short-term buy that hasn't worked out, but with both him and Varane it felt like, they played for RM, they must be good, without any real thought plan.

The right thing to do. Casemiro needs to go also.
I hope we now focus on players similar to Vidic, Evra, Hernandez - relatively unknown, small transfer fee, huge players in the end for us! Obviously won’t know for sure but good when it works out, better than big money flops!

The buys of Casemiro and Varane pretty much show the blinkered chaotic approach to our transfer activities in recent years

Yeah. Stupid , buying world class players.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They were past their best world class players. It was like when we brought Ronaldo back. So yeah, it was stupid
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Casemiro has never been world class.

He was the best DM on the planet for 3-4 years or certainly top 2.
Recency bias and this forum are really quite something. He was brilliant for Madrid. Their fans are very hard to please and they loved him. Says it all.

Well one of either Evans or Lindelof. I wonder if AWB would be any good at CB..................

The fact that RM were willing to let him go, it just didn't feel right at the time for me. Maybe it was just a short-term buy that hasn't worked out, but with both him and Varane it felt like, they played for RM, they must be good, without any real thought plan.
