Bellingham or Foden?

Based on tonight, Foden should play, with Gordon & Palmer either side in the wide areas. Bellingham had a stinker.

bellingham's game seems to me to rely a hell of a lot on his physicality - powerful running, strength to hold off/run through players etc. seems to have good close control, but his passing isn't much to write home about, so if he's not making strong runs into the box he doesn't serve that much of a purpose.

he's looked pretty leggy this tournament, and largely ineffective, really he should be dropped, but doubt that will happen.

i'd like to see foden at 10, gordon on the left, bellingham as an 8/on the bench, but i suspect we'll see more of the same.

Play Foden on the right like he does for City. Allows him to cut in and shoot as well as create.

Saw someone describe Bellingham as a rich man's McTominay which is actually pretty accurate.

I think Palmer should still be playing second fiddle to Saka - it's always easier for an attacking player to come on as a sub. But for the sake of balance, Gordon (or Eze) need to be starting on the left and that means deciding on one of Bellingham or Foden. I prefer Foden tbh.

Do we really need Bellingham in the team?

He hasn't done anything since the first half of the first game.

Southgate wouldn’t dare drop Bellingham

posted on 25/6/24

Yes, the way that Southgate has set up the midfield, it should be one or the other in the attacking cm role.

Drop Rice - he's been bang average for three games. Like Kane another of Southgate's sacred cows

posted on 25/6/24

Depends on the opposition, but they shouldn’t both be starting.

Really Kane has been holding us back, Bellingham last 2 games awful too. We need more from our man upfront than what Kanes offering us atm its really bad, he hasnt looked fit either. One of those where hes never gonna get dropped but Toney would offer so much more and get more out of those around.

Don't play two holding players, play Rice as the only one. Get two further ahead of him and there will be no issue with player both Bellingham and Foden in the same team as they'll be able to interchange with Foden able to come inside. This will also help Saka on the other side, with whoever is selected, either Mainoo or TAA you'd think as they offer runs on the outside.

Although that's too attacking for Safegate but obvious to everybody else.

Oh my days 🤦🏻 He was one of the better players today. bellers needs to do a largely fixed position, he’s all over the place currently which disrupts both defensive & offensive patterns of play

As much as I’d like to see it, he’s never going to do it and he really needed to have tried that a few times before the tournament.

He won’t change the defence much or the two in front and in that context it’s an either or. That or the really radical thing would be play both of them centrally as well as two cms and drop Kane. Again he won’t do it but I’d love to see it!

for me, drop Jude next to rice, foden at 10 then palmer/gordon on the left. also id like trent at rb and walker at lb. this would give better balance

i havent seen mainoo play before. i was impressed with his touch and movement . much more effective than both trent or gallacher in cm

It could also be Foden, Saka or Palmer on the right. Those suggesting Foden at 10 and Bellingham at 8 are nuts. That would be a very exposed England midfield, and would probably not compensate for that going forward cos they can't built up properly from deep.

i agree. lineker and shearer had it right the other day. if we add more pace up top next to kane, the opp def backs off giving more space in mf. giving Jude/Foden/kane more space. not gonna get that with just kane up top

We desperately need Shaw back, Tripps has been awful. We badly miss him building up from the back. If we could get him back and start Mainoo we may just see much better build up, even with Foden on the left.

Bellingham is arguably one of the most overrated players around.

A workhorse with no technical ability shouldn't be playing so high up

That would make a big difference. You could see it in the first half tonight, Trippier was a bit more adventurous and the left side looked dangerous for a while.

I still think something has to be done in the centre too though. To have the exact same issues as we had against Denmark despite Slovenias shape tonight was more worrying than the previous games.

If we could get Shaw, Mainoo and Gordon into the starting line up I think we’d end up looking better for it. We’d have width on the left and better build up. But the others still need to do more with and without the ball. The disconnect between the front five and the five behind them has been obvious, and neither are helping each other enough when they have the ball.

posted on 25/6/24

Just having them in will help the others enormously though as you’ve then got players that will break lines in both movement and passes.

Personally I’d like to see this (if shaw is fit)

Pickford
Walker
Stones
Guehi
Shaw
Rice
Mainoo
Foden
Gordon
Saka
Kane

Foden and Saka, can swap for Bellingham and Palmer. Think the first two in that set up would suit Kane more though.

posted on 25/6/24

Saka is very good at the one thing he does but is relatively predictable and a decent left back can do a number on him as we saw against Bayern. Palmer isn’t as pacey but he is much more unpredictable and makes things happen. Probably gonna have to be a super sub for now but at some point should start games

Given how poor Bellingham’s been I wouldn’t mind that.

I just don’t think this system suits him at all. Pre tournament and after the first game, I’d have dropped Foden. It’s just been so obvious the last couple of games though that Bellingham in the middle isn’t working in either transition and with the two midfielders we’ve got behind, we look better when Foden is central.

Southgate’s subs both tonight and the last game is the worrying thing to me that he seems to be not seeing it. There’s players that look off form and there’s players that are struggling due to the system and it doesn’t look to me like he knows the difference at all.
