The next England manager?

Howe or Potter would be fine. Don’t want Poch. I wouldn’t want a German, Argentinian, or Scotsman managing England.

A few years ago though I’d have suggested Wenger.

Ange would be good. Watching England is spectacularly boring, has been since at least 1998, and they'll always lose when it matters so why not smash the majority of terrible international sides by going all out attack for 90 mins?

I think it will likely be Potter given he’s out of work. I can’t see Howe leaving Newcastle, although I would prefer him.

I'd take Potter. It does seem like he's waiting for the England job and I reckon he could get a lot more from our attacking talent.

I think the next manager should be a foreigner. Somebody who doesn't have mates in the FA , who's not going to let the media pick the team for him and who's going to bring a much needed cultural change to the England set up.
Capelo was that guy but he was run out of the country because the media wanted the status quo no to be changed in any way

I can’t see Potter, Howe or Poch taking the job. They’re club managers who would earn vastly more staying that way. Potter maybe is a possibility.

It’ll be Lampard or Carsley I reckon, outside chance of Rooney.

Don't rule out Rodgers

Question marks over Potter IMO. While he played nice footy he has a track record of teams not scoring. Lacks any sort of X factor. He reminds me of Southgate in a way.seems like they both read the same Modern Coaching and Player Management Techniques, volume 2 , so they know all the theory but lack on the practical side.

Whoever it is will have to be completely devoid of personality, emotion or anything resembling flair. Even if they sacked Southgate they'd come back around to him as the only suitable candidate.

Absolutely no chance will it be Lampard or Rooney.

People will get what they voted for and we will end up with Stevie G somehow failing to qualify us for the tournament we host in 2028

The useless FA will probably stick with Safegate because he's a nice man that says the right politically correct things to the right people for the ludicrous politically correct times we live in. He's also made all the players feel together and is happy to molly coddle them.

Why?

England have tried everything and it’s still shiite. At least with names like Gerrard Lampard and Rooney you don’t have to get hopeful. Embrace the shiite.

I'm at a loss as to how another Manager is going to get a crop of generational talents to play better...

We should be smashing teams....I can't believe they don't believe in themselves

It’s not been shiete though has it, the man’s record so far is World Cup Quarters and Semi, Euro Final. Sir Alf aside, it’s the best we’ve had. He has lost to Croatia - who have been incredible the last 2 world cups, France - best side of the last 6 years and Italy on pens in a final. People talk like we’re still getting done by Iceland in a game that matters.

I think they do

The issue is too many cooks in the kitchen - that front 4 doesn’t work without Shaw or another left footer bombing on. Unfortunately, Southgate has picked an unfit Shaw and zero adequate cover - that’s what he should be getting pelters for.

I’m also highly dubious of the inclusion of Wharton ahead of Sterling, Rashford, Grealish - what’s the point of Wharton, he clearly has zero intention to use him, meanwhile we have zero width on the left

There’s a middle ground.

I’m inclined to agree with Striketeam a bit, yes the results are okay.

I’m inclined to agree with others a bit too, in that the football could and probably should be better.

Talk of how we should be smashing teams is nonsense though, how often does that happen at tournaments? Hardly ever.

Southgate has actually broken numerous positive records fwiw.

Biggest win
Most games won in a row
Most consecutive games scoring

I could go on as there are literally more.

Saying that, I want this to be his last tournament. I don’t get his squad, I don’t get his selections so far and his press conferences have annoyed me too.

I agree, he should go after this tournament, I think he always planned to.

His squad selection is now looking very poor for this tournament Shaw and Wharton look like odd inclusions. He clearly lacks a firm plan at CM.

But we have to get behind these guys - there is a serious chance to make another final here

That seems the tactic - play safe to grind to the latter stages then rely on lady luck for the dice to eventually fall - open top bus, knighthood, icon of the English game, bury 66 ghost etc.

posted on 26/6/24

I agree the fans should get behind the team, I find a lot of England fans entitled and I also think they vastly overrated the squad, it has quite horrible balance.

At the same time, the team needs to give the fans something to shout about.

Nothing new there though. That's where we were in 2012-16.

I will take it. Ghost to a final like that and then one heroic performance with us winning please.

No one will mention the earlier games - winners write the history

And that’s what some of our fans need to remember, pre Southgate we had Capello openly being mocked for looking like Postman Pat by the players he picked and getting gunned at the World Cup, then Hodgson starting with Andy Carroll up front and losing to Iceland in a KO game. Then pint of wine Allardyce for 1 game before getting exposed in a fake sheikh sting.

Southgate has restored some pride in my opinion. We’ve not been scintillating, but we’ve also not been the mockery we were prior

There's not being a mockery but in a sport remembered for flair, style & excitement it's not very inspiring.

Brazil 70
Netherlands 74
Argentina 86

OK I picked WC teams but iconic stuff and right now it is tough to see England get close in those stakes. That said, France might have peaked, Spain have a chance if Yamal does some more crazy sh.t and right now Ragnick has Austria firing...still time.
