I think it would be best to get Casemiro’s wages off the books. I’ll happily be proven wrong but I’d be utterly shocked if he finds his form again at this club.

Last season he was atrocious. One of the worst players I’ve seen play regularly in my time watching United.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I will be shocked if he rediscovers his form from his debut season. His timing, passing, tackling, tracking, marking, everything you'd expect from a DM was non existent last season.

But it does not change the fact you simply described yourself.

Is this going to go on much longer, chaps? Is it getting anywhere productive or shall we just leave it there now?

Yep. Other than his aerial ability and the odd important goal he was poor at everything else last season. Essentially a worse version of Fellaini.

Another consideration with Mount is whether bringing in Ugarte and strengthening the defence might see him and Bruno starting in midfield again with some regularity.

I’m personally not a fan of this, but it may be something that Ten Hag will be discussing with the recruitment team when it comes to the midfield.

We’ll play a lot of games next season with the Europa, so we’ll need to prepare the squad with that in mind. But the cups could represent a good opportunity for some academy players to stake a claim for some minutes in the first team.

There’s obviously a big jump from the 18s to men’s football, but historically United tend to see players make that transition into the first team squad more often than ones that have been playing in the u21s, and this is a very talented under 18 group we have at the club right now.

Casemiro was very poor last season but he was nowhere near as poor as McTominay. McTominay is an awful footballer.

Once you're on that downward trajectory then there is no way back especially in a demanding league. Was last season the extreme end of his poor form or the new normal for him?! Who knows.

I'd certainly like to see more rotation (where possible), and the cups should provide an opportunity to do it. One criticism of ETH from his Ajax days was that he rotated very little. With us, you could argue that lack of quality in depth and significant injuries had forced his hand in that respect but where we do improve the squad I'd like to see it used more, including talented youngsters as you say.

For example it's not uncommon for teams to use the 2nd GK in cups and now that Onana has had a full season and played almost every game, I'd like to see Bayindir get more minutes (or an academy player - whoever is better!). Would also like to see Bruno not etched into the fibres of every single team sheet.

Signing a really versatile player (Kadioglu?) would also help. We can't run players into the ground and then act surprised when the injuries stack up.

posted on 19/7/24

Yeah, I agree with that. I guess with Ajax you could forgive it somewhat as I don’t think they play as many games as us due to fewer league games and one less cup competition - we’ve also done well in the cups, aside from last season in the CL, so we’ve ended up playing more games than the majority of teams in Europe.

I’d like to see ETH be a bit more flexible with the shape of the team to use the squad a bit more as well. Obviously injuries haven’t helped, and the options we have at full back, but I think there’s times where switching to a back three more often could be useful in getting some players into games where they could benefit from the change in shape, as well as it potentially helping to improve performances and results where used - I think this is especially true with some of our attacking options, where we may need to try and get more out of them if they don’t leave (I’m thinking Antony, Amad and Sancho specifically).

Ah come on VC I know you don’t rate McTominay at all and I agree he is an average all round footballer but Casemiro was worse last season.

On Casemiro vs McTominay...

I'd probably sell McTominay over Casemiro. Firstly, when on some semblance of form, Casemiro is a highly valuable player in a position that isn't easy to find top quality in. He's a specialist defensive midfield player and one of the best around (when fit and in form). He's a player that tends to be at his best when he plays a lot, and last season was the first in his career where he missed a lot through injury. I think he deserves some benefit of the doubt. I'm worried as anyone by the signs he's displayed in his game but our set-up didn't help anyone and as mentioned, his injuries had to be a factor.

Also, for all McTominay's goal scoring exploits, he actually scores less than Casemiro on average (3.6 goals per season versus 5.25 goals per season over the last 8 seasons). If it's someone from midfield who can chip in with a few extra goals, Casemiro actually does it better.

Lastly, losing Casemiro would weaken us in two areas: a player with massive experience at winning and competing for trophies, and real aerial prowess in terms of winning duals in both boxes and general play - the latter is something we have to be a bit mindful of I think. Varane, Maguire and Casemiro are comfortably our best headers of the ball. Varane has already left and Maguire won't be a starter (and may well leave himself). It leaves us a little light in the aerial dominance stakes if Casemiro also exits.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I might have answered that question, but I think you've talked me round, Berbaking. With the caveat that if a Saudi club offered a preposterous fee for Casemiro, I think we should cash in and reinvest.

Ugarte be kidding me? It’s this easy to get transfers done? How incompetent was the former regime????

posted on 19/7/24

Havnt seen a lot of Ugarte, but as others have said he seems to be the type of player we need so hopefully be a good signing if it happens.
On the McT v Casemiro debate, I just assumed that Casemiro would be gone this summer but I’ve noticed in the couple weeks we have been back training he has featured pretty prominently in Uniteds social media out put which you wouldn’t usually expect to see if the club were trying to punt.
Personally, I’d sell both if at all possible. Casemiro, while brilliant at his best, looked shot as a player last season so if we got any fee for him and his wages off the books I’d take it. And while I love a youth product doing well, and McT always tries his best, the simple fact is he isn’t good enough to be part of a squad that wants to win things regularly. On top of that, selling him as a youth player in today’s football finance world is pretty lucrative to the club in comparison to selling a non academy player. So if possible I’d sell both and get in upgrades, easier said than done tho.

Today's rumours suggest that Spurs are competing with Fulham for McTominay's signature.

I tend to agree with DoireDevilBhoy. If we can get decent fees for both, sell both. Just imagine replacing McT and Casemiro with Ugarte and Zubimendi.

Zubimendi would be a grate signing just to hear this belting out at OT.

Casemiro won’t stay to be back up most of the season. Too much money sitting there as well that could be put to better use. Still not sure he was actually injured for the cup final when he pulled out with an injury just before kick off after being named on the bench.

Flog them both hopefully, McT just isn’t good enough and never has been.

Haven’t seen a single link to Zubimendi, or is this just your preference/dream scenario? Would be great, we’d finally control a midfield battle.

That's a dream scenario. We were loosely linked with Zubimendi over the last couple of years so I'm sure he's on our radar, but there have never been suggestions of concrete discussions.

Would people take Rabiot on a free as well as Ugarte if we were able to offload McT and Casemiro?

Ugarte
Mainoo
Bruno
Rabiot
Mount

Not sure on Eriksens situation?

Better depth/quality than previously.

What’s the craic with Amrabat ?

posted on 19/7/24

I think Rabiot depends on the wages. It wouldn’t be the worst signing if the wages are reasonable, would give us better options in the middle and given his age it would allow us some time for Mainoo to develop without being overplayed.

Forgot about him tbh.

Wouldn't be against another loan for Amrabat if we don't have money to buy anyone. No idea how Fiorentina did without him last season and if they have plans to use him again or not? Showed in the Cup Final he can be of some use.

posted on 19/7/24

Would take Amrabat over Rabiot all day long, too much baggage around Rabiot along with his huge wage demands makes him a very unattractive proposition.
