one of the worst finishers in the league
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I did read that despite scoring 19 he actually was still below his X goals last season, although not by much. Let’s face it, with Brennan, Werner and Richy he would definitely fit in with regards to that
----------------------------------------------------------------------
he's underperformed his xG by 15 on just over 500 shots across his career

for context, Werner has underperformed his xG by 6 on just over 600 shots across his career

players like this never become key starters for CL sides because the manager doesn't trust them. Look at Nunez and Jesus. We'd be paying 60m for someone we'd hoping becomes a backup striker in a years time

True but I do look at Nunez and Jesus and see that Arsenal have challenged for the league the last two seasons and Liverpool win trophies.

If I thought for a second that buying Solanke would stop is splashing on someone like Osimhen then I would be against it - but we won’t and the chances are in 12 months we will still be looking at someone who is no better than Solanke anyway.

The big draw of Solanke is he is English - and we’re feeling the pinch with UEFA requirements towards that

homegrown isn't really a concern for us at all assuming Spence has earned a spot in the squad

Brennan
Maddison
Gray
Spence

any further homegrown players just count towards the foreign quota anyway

Would rather keep the money and stick with Richie and lankshear. This has all the hallmarks of not getting our top target so settling for what’s available later on, not what improves us.

I don’t think he improves us at all.

You need 8 for Europe, we have:

BJ
Maddison
Gray
Spence
Skipp
Forster
Can’t remember if Davies counts or not

Then no one “senior” so it will be a youngster. Solanke and Eze bolster those options

His X goals

posted on 2/8/24

All players develop differently. Since Bournemouth came back into the league he's been:

22/23 - 6 goals & 7 assists in 2800mins
23/24 - 19 goals & 3 assists in 3300mins

In the championship the season they got promotion he got 29 goals & 7 assists

Ideally you wait to see how he does this season and if he matches last season's output then you know there's a genuine PL player there

no you don't need 8 for Europe. if you want to have 25 4 have to be club trained and 4 have to be association trained

That’s what I meant, you essentially need 4 trained in England, hence the list I made?

no, only 4 association trained players can be registered before they start counting towards the foreign trained quota. We already have Johnson, Maddison, Spence and Gray.

the other 4 spots are reserved for club trained players like Austin, Skipp etc

Solanke is a good player, we saw that last season. He’s good technically for a no 9, he can carry the ball, he can link play, he can run in behind, he can press and he’s got good movement

If you want a good player at a prime age you need to pay the money otherwise you’re left with only young players

The striker market is completely dead for those turning their noses to at Solanke too. Someone like osimhen would never join us

I can see how the data-driven model works now. There’s a clear algorithm. They work through a filter players.
1) Are they in the last year of their contract? (Bissouma)
2) Are they from a war-torn country we can exploit? (Solomon)
3) Are they from a relegated team? (Maddison)
4) Are they from a bottom half/ relegation threatened team? (Richy/ Solanke)
5) Are they in financial trouble? (Johnson)
6) Are they available on loan? (Werner)
7) Are they surplus to requirements/ bench-warmers at another club? (Kulu, Bentancur)
8) Are they kids who might be good and we can get some sell-on from? (Gray, Bergvall, Udogie, Sarr)

And finally…
9) Are they a technically good footballer who specialises in a position? (Vic, Porro, VDV, Romero)

Solanke could come in and have a blinding season. But he could come in and be very average.

If I told you that they needed to knock down WHL and move to a bigger stadium in order to buy players like Dominic Solanke, you would’ve laughed in my face. But now we’re saying it’s fine and it’s all good. What are we doing?🤣

Well I’d rather have Solanke and Eze over Spence for certain - and possibly over BJ and Gray at this point as well

well you don't have to have one or the other, just making the point that we don't need to be signing players specifically because they're homegrown

Would much prefer Toney or Jonathan David

I think Solanke is an upgrade on what we have👍🏻

But what are we aiming for?
Are Villa, Liverpool, Utd & Newcastle looking at us and thinking “Ooh, Spurs are doing some good business, we better watch our backs this season!”?

No but it helps.

It’s also nice to sign players who have kicked a prem football before - we have had plenty of flops from foreign leagues like Lo Celso, Ndombele, Soldado

name the strikers who this wouldn’t apply to

This is the consequence of all PL clubs becoming richer due to TV money. Mid table and lower half clubs have no reason to sell their star players when it could be the difference between staying up or going down. The exception is when clubs are tight with FFP or when a player has only 1 year left on their contract. Long gone are the days where the big 6 can bully the rest of the league regardless of stadium size

David is unproven - why is he still at Lille despite a decent record. I wouldn’t be against it, but I think out of all the options he is the riskiest even at a relatively low fee

Toney - If we actually want him then Why are we waiting? I suspect he is not first choice

most of our highest rated players currently came from abroad

Vicario, Porro, Romero, VDV, Udogie, Sarr, Bentancur, Son

conversely, most of the players people want dropped came with PL experience

Bissouma, Maddison, Brennan, Richy, Werner

Jonathan David has never scored more non pen goals in a season in France than what Solanke did last year in the PL. plus Solanke has a better all round game
