I temporarily forgot my favourite old adage: The less a man makes declarative statements, the less apt he is to look foolish in retrospect.
I'll still only believe it's happening when I see him in a United tracksuit though...
In seriousness, it does look like it's done now, doesn't it?
I'm really not sure about this one. I absolutely love Amorim, and his football. But I'm worried that this isn't the right time for him to be coming, and that we really, really don't have the right kind of players for him.
If I'm right on that last point, unless we see a very significant change in Amorim's philosophy and tactics, it's a big issue, because we also have not a bean to spend. Ineos will be relying on him to completely change these players' attitudes, ideas about football, and even roles. Which is something ETH obviously tried very hard and largely failed to do.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Surely the new sporting leadership have thought this through properly, though, right? They've thought it through, right?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’m just as bothered about Amorim having thought it through properly, tbh.
I assume he’ll have been told (or is otherwise aware) that we’ll only have to spend what we can bring in in sales in January. And that next summer will overwhelmingly likely be exceptionally tight too.
Luckily, he loves working with youngsters, so when he realises that we can’t afford to buy him one, let alone four, wingbacks, he can scour our U18s or U16s for suitable candidates for promotion.

Btw did you watch Wan Bissaka at the weekend? Seemed a different player going forward, actually posed a threat in the final third against us, driving at our defence and actually managing passes that found the forwards!
Was he trying to prove a point, or just the fact he was in a side with less pressure, or that he needed the right coaching?
Not sure but with him and Dalot we had the best and worst of both worlds. One good defender but offered little going forward, the other decent going forward but a liability at the back.

I don't think a massive overhaul is needed straight away, we have good enough players to push for top 4 next season with the right tactical set up and getting players back from injury. Full backs are a concern but midfield is decent with Mainoo back, Ugarte settling in and Bruno finding some form. If we get the service to the forwards and a bit of confidence, we will get goals.

If INEOS have done rigorous enough homework, they should either know from Amorim that he proposes to do things that don't involve trying to replicate the Sporting blueprint, or have some concrete plans to reshape the squad in good time to give him the tools he requires. ...or they ought to acknowledge that we're right back at the start of a recruitment cycle and are willing to sacrifice performance for a good while.

Yeah, the point is that since the start of his managerial career, Amorim has used 3-4-2-1, near exclusively, usually with wingbacks (almost like old school up-and-down touchline-hugging wingers) and tricky inside forwards with very specific profiles. Both of which we're short of.

With the 2 in behind the ST, I could see Amad and Zirkzee doing those roles. Amad wants to cut inside a lot anyway and Zirkzee isn't an out and out centre forward from what I've seen. Agree on the wing backs, Max may do ok if he can stay fit but Dalot would struggle, Shaw would be good but let's face it, he'll be lucky to play 10 games a season.

The only issue with Zirkzee might be work rate and his ability in the press.
Amorim’s four hardest working players are his two inside forwards (one of which I expect would be Bruno) and his two box-to-box midfielders.
I could see him going for Bruno plus one (Amad?) in front of Mount and Ugarte, for example.
He expects the players in those four positions to be on the move for 90 minutes.

He had more of a zip about him in that one game than he ever did in all his time for us put together. He did manage to get a pass that found his attackers in the box which was novel.
I agree on the general point Vengeance made, he's one of those players who excels at a certain level but can't make the step up or deal with the pressure of a bigger club.

The thing that infuriates me about Zirkzee is he's so lightweight on the ball. He gets easily dispossessed, but what's worse is the lame way he passes the ball. It's so soft and so often intercepted.
The first thing to do is toughen him up and tell him if you're passing the ball then pass, don't tickle!

Because he’s an Amorim-type CM: sharp, tidy, hard-working, intelligent, good presser.
Obviously, if he can’t get fit, then that’s all by the by.

If you have a look at players like Morita and Bragança (and further back at Nunes), you’ll see they have a lot of similarities with Mount’s game, particularly off the ball, and physical attributes.

Full backs are a concern but midfield is decent with Mainoo back, Ugarte settling in and Bruno finding some form. If we get the service to the forwards and a bit of confidence, we will get goals.

Or did we just let him have the ball, in the same way that our opponents did when he played for us, in the knowledge that he's not very good at doing anything with it? He certainly got forward a lot, but I don't remember him creating any jeopardy for us.

Great news.
I wonder how Rosso is feeling, having *staked his reputation* on the certainty that Amorim would reject United in order to go to City.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I temporarily forgot my favourite old adage: The less a man makes declarative statements, the less apt he is to look foolish in retrospect.

Ability wise, possibly. In terms of the the right character profile and attitude? Not quite sure.

Playmaker,
Some players, like AWB, are better suited to clubs of a certain level and just aren’t the right fit for us. Was he trying to prove a point? We weren’t exactly impressive, so I believe even AWB's non-professional cousin could have performed just as well!

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Because he’s an Amorim-type CM: sharp, tidy, hard-working, intelligent, good presser.
Obviously, if he can’t get fit, then that’s all by the by.

If you have a look at players like Morita and Bragança (and further back at Nunes), you’ll see they have a lot of similarities with Mount’s game, particularly off the ball, and physical attributes.
