There’s a difference between setting up to defend and playing a counterattacking game.

Very annoyed both today and against Sevilla how we were unable to string attacks after winning the hall in defence. Give it straight back to them within 2 seconds 90% of the time just invites more pressure. No attacking threat whatsoever and eventually the opponents are gonna get chances to score. The keeper can’t bail you out every time, but not being able to counter means you’re going to fail to score every time.

Mourinho has/had counterattacking sides who can sit deep but actually attack in the counter.

Gotta move the ball quickly and decisively on the counter in order to make it count. Perhaps that's something we need to work on on the training ground if we plan on playing this defensively against "big" sides. Can't draw all of them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s not even about speed though. Normally we pass it straight back to them

We didn't change the system agst Seville
_____________
No but we still played very defensively. We’re not going to progress with this discrepancy in approaches.

But that is my point. If we need to pmsy a few games defensively to get our defensive mojo back, then it's a price worth paying for a few games. Then we go more offensive, but not to the previous extremes.

Ole messed up big time starting with such a defensive team. They were much better with their better attacking players on the pitch.

Perhaps I should have added "accurately" as well . This feels like it's been an issue for a while - I can't remember the last Chelsea side that was consistently dangerous on the counter-attack.

Might be captain Morgan speaking again but kante is an awful footballer

Sorry, but a good defence comes from an established system with actual fluency to it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It also seems to come with Mendy Silva and Azpi in the team.

At crucial times our passing was really poor today and not just from Kante

Reece James is really improving rapidly. Made one positional mistake today, but otherwise he was excellent

We have a full-strength team now. Lampard is still acting like we need another two transfer windows
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well we have had a full strength team for how long now?

Loved the way he was using his strength more. Still want to see him play with some intensity though
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The intensity was there in one play at the end that unfortunately fell to de gea. But yeah, hes holding back all game.

Evra's so likeable to me. Speaks from the heart but isn't a dinosaur like Souness or a psycho like Keane

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yup. He's a proper "two-way" full back. Defensively solid and can whip a dangerous ball into the box. He's not the fastest but his strength more than makes up for that (in defence and attack) - can muscle players out of the way with ease.

Long enough to not play the underdog
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you keep conceding 3 goals in a game, you are the underdog. Truth is Lampard has not had the time with these players and the players gave not had the time yet either. Pulisic for example is clearly feeling his way back.Havertzand Werner not up to speed yet either.
