Terrible game to watch, but perhaps going back to defensive basics is exactly what this Chelsea team needs to do before becoming morecadventurous. On the upside, we didn't lose 4 0 this time and we should have had a penalty.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It can but not when you completely change the system. What does it prove that we can, surprisingly only defend when we play very defensively?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We didn't change the system agst Seville
Worrying that Pulisic Werner and havertz Look garbage in this system tho

United parked the bus first half of last season then started bringing the two together from January onward when they signed VAR.
January is a good marker to judge I think
I dont a feeling the there is any sort of confidence in this team. What brings them together is trying not to lose or give up a bunch of goals now.

We just got comprehensively outplayed a retreated into a shell. Like an Eastern European minnow would vs Sevilla.

Thought you gave the game a miss
There’s a difference between setting up to defend and playing a counterattacking game.
Very annoyed both today and against Sevilla how we were unable to string attacks after winning the hall in defence. Give it straight back to them within 2 seconds 90% of the time just invites more pressure. No attacking threat whatsoever and eventually the opponents are gonna get chances to score. The keeper can’t bail you out every time, but not being able to counter means you’re going to fail to score every time.
Mourinho has/had counterattacking sides who can sit deep but actually attack in the counter.
Kante is now becoming confusing. He made so many good interceptions today and cleaned up well but then kept givi g it away. We need a Kovacic Kante hybrid.

another sign in a growing sample size that with Mendy and Thiago we can actually have a functioning defence. Draw United away not that bad. Poor play from attacking guys today, slow play didn’t help then. We need to find the balance, last two games Lampard gone too far other way. But that attempt to change balance was needed, let’s see us be more positive next game.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
More or less my thoughts. If doing this works then it's worth it for a few games.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah. In theory it is part of the journey of finding the right balance.

Think we need to let Kante sit for a bit
The entire defense was really good, Mendy/Silva the standouts but all of them did their jobs, liked the linkup between Azpl & James on the right side. Jorginho & Kante weren't bad either, better in the first half but both decent.
The overall setup was just too risk averse, played the game like we needed the back 3, not because the back 3 would give the protection needed to be more offensive. Once again, the lack of balance is Lampard's problem, everything's a tactical extreme with him.

Mendy - 8
Azpi - 7
Silva - 8
Zouma - 6
James - 7
Kante - 5 - Learn how to pass ffs
Jorginho - 7
Chilwell- 7
Pulisic- - 6
Werner - 4
Havertz - 4
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Kante was really poor going forwards aside from a couple of nice balls out to the wing. We had the same issues with a Kante-Jorginho midfield in a 3-4-3 as we do in a 4-2-3-1. They just don't feed the attack with balls in dangerous areas consistently enough. I'd hate to think that this pairing is going to be our first choice midfield for the season.
I think Kovacic would help us transition from defence to attack better.
If we’re playing defensively we should play Kovacic instead of Jorginho
DDG made 1 save with all our attacking firepower, can't find that balance between attack & defence
Kante’s form is worrying. Becoming more and more clear the biggest argument for him being a key starter is just his reputation

Agree with this, but it's not that unusual to test extremes before finding the balance. I think our passing let the system down today. Kante and Havertz especially
Jorginho, Havertz and Ziyech good when we’re playing a fluid attacking game.
But not for these scrappy affairs.

Gotta move the ball quickly and decisively on the counter in order to make it count. Perhaps that's something we need to work on on the training ground if we plan on playing this defensively against "big" sides. Can't draw all of them.
