Who is the greatest manager of all time

Billy Nicholson took Spurs from the bottom of the table to the double in two years.

Bill Shanks took Liverpool from the second division to the title within two years.

Brian Clough took a provincial team from the second division to winning the European Cup within 3 years.

These are the sort of managers that should be classed as the best managers of all time. Not managers that have spent the most to win trophies.

SAF is RUBBISH IN EUROPE!!!!

...............

Two cup winners cups two CL.

There are not many more managers out there who have won more than four trophies in Europe, and fifteen domestic titles.

Anfield of dreams

So Paisley won 3 European cups in 9 years, thats 33.3% right? Pep is 2 in 4 years, thats 50% so does that mean Pep > Paisley? no it doesnt.

SAF is a great great manager and I have the upmost respect for what he has done and achieved in the game. He is not quite the greatest because while he has dominated on the domestic front he has failed to build a team that has consistenty dominated Europe like Super Bob Paisley did.
It is the main reason (in my opinion) why Bob Paisley was the greatest and will remain the greatest of all time.

There's an argument that the old European days is very different to the modern Champions League, no one has defended the CL in its era and that includes the other great managers like Mourinho and Pep. Where as with the EC, teams like Madrid won it 5 times in a row.

In 1989 United nearly got relegated. By 1993 Fergie had won the FA Cup, ECWC, and the PL.

Everyone spends money, that doesnt matter. Chelsea spent over 500m and only won the CL this season, So even spending money has no bearing on how good a manager is. Even some hypocritical Utd fans that only go on about City spending cannot deny Mancini is a good manager.

They way Mancini handled Tevez was laughable.

Id say bringing back Tevez swung the title to Citys favour.

Has to be Clough for me for what he did at two unfashionable clubs especially Forest, never be repeated that. Some achievment.

Pains me to say it though after he dumped us out of the European Cup in 79 as holders, still hurts that.

I don't think Fergies European record is as bad as many make out. He has been to 4 finals, winning two, only coming second to the best footballing side of their generation. You have to take into account how difficult the foreigner rule made Europe early on, not many teams walk into Europe and win it without recent experience either.

Jock Stein was a great manager, as were Shankly, Paisley, Clough and many others.

I am probably bias but I think the fact Fergy has won things consistently for so long would make him the best, the legacy he will leave will be like no other.
