Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders, who snapped one of the most famous photographs taken in outer space, has died at the age of 90.
Officials say a small plane he was flying crashed into the water north of Seattle, Washington.
Anders' son Greg confirmed that his father was flying the small plane, and that his body was recovered on Friday afternoon.
"The family is devastated. He was a great pilot. He will be missed," a statement from the family reads.
Anders - who was a lunar module pilot on the Apollo 8 mission - took the iconic Earthrise photograph, one of the most memorable and inspirational images of Earth from space.
Taken on Christmas Eve during the 1968 mission, the first crewed space flight to leave Earth and reach the Moon, the picture shows the planet rising above the horizon from the barren lunar surface.
Anders later described it as his most significant contribution to the space programme.
The image is widely credited with motivating the global environmental movement and leading to the creation of Earth Day, an annual event to promote activism and awareness of caring for the planet.
Speaking of the moment, Anders said: "We came all this way to explore the Moon, and the most important thing that we discovered was the Earth."
Officials said on Friday that Anders crashed his plane around 11:40PDT (1940BST).
The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said the 90-year-old was flying a Beechcraft A A 45 - also known as a T-34. The agency said that the plane crashed about 80ft (25m) from the coast of Jones Island.
Witness Philip Person told King-TV, external in Seattle that he saw the crash.
The plane began doing what appeared to be a loop and became inverted, he told the network.
"I could not believe what I was seeing in front of my eyes," Person told the local news station. "It looked like something right out of a movie or special effects. With the large explosion and flames and everything."
Footage that allegedly captured the plane crash appears to show an effort to pull up at the last second, before its the surface of the water and becomes a fiery wreck.
BBC News has not verified the video.
Anders also served as the backup pilot to the Apollo 11 mission, the name of the effort that led to the first Moon landing on July 24, 1969.
Following Anders' retirement from the space programme in 1969, the former astronaut largely worked in the aerospace industry for several decades. He also served as US Ambassador to Norway for a year in the 1970s.
But he is best remembered for the Apollo 8 mission and the iconic photograph he took from space.
"In 1968, during Apollo 8, Bill Anders offered to humanity among the deepest of gifts an astronaut can give. He traveled to the threshold of the Moon and helped all of us see something else: ourselves," Nasa Administrator Bill Nelson said in a statement.
Mark Kelly, a former astronaut who now serves as a US Senator for the state of Arizona, said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, that Anders "inspired me and generations of astronauts and explorers. My thoughts are with his family and friends".
England's T20 World Cup defence is already in danger after a damaging 36-run defeat by Australia in Barbados.
After a roaring start, their old rivals piled up 201-7 before England's batters fell away badly in their pursuit.
Jos Buttler and Phil Salt reached 73-0 but after Salt fell in the eighth over England slipped further and further behind the required rate as wickets tumbled.
They ended on 165-6 with Buttler's 42 their highest score.
In truth the game was won in the first five overs, however.
Travis Head and David Warner flogged England's bowling with a partnership of 70 off 30 balls.
Seven of Australia's 13 sixes were hit in their opening stand, giving them the platform to post the highest score of the World Cup so far.
England now will likely have to win their final two games against Oman and Namibia to have a chance of avoiding the embarrassment of failing to reach the Super 8 phase, and even that may only set up a scenario where they rely on net run-rate to pip Scotland.
Leyton Orient have announced plans to create a permanent memorial for Justin Edinburgh at Brisbane Road.
Edinburgh, who had just guided the O's back in to the English Football League, passed away in 2019, aged 49, five days after suffering a cardiac arrest.
The club have kept the tributes laid in Edinburgh's memory and will create a 'collage-like memorial' from those that are still in good condition.
“As a club, we will always be indebted to the work that Justin did here," Leyton Orient director of football Martin Ling told the club website on the fifth anniversary of Edinburgh's death.
"He took us on the first step from the National League back to League One and we will never forget that.
“When he passed away it was an awful time for everyone here, but the unity of all of our supporters showed what a special club we are.
"It’s fantastic that the club will be turning the tributes into a permanent memorial to honour Justin and I am looking forward to seeing it.”
All cats in England must be microchipped and registered on a database from Monday under new laws.
The new legislation applies to all cats aged 20 weeks and older, including indoor cats.
The RSPCA said that one in 10 cats going into their centres were still not microchipped, despite the incoming law change.
Pet owners found breaking the rules face a £500 fine if they do not comply within 21 days.
Data from a Cats Protection survey suggested about 1.9 million cats in England were not microchipped. The charity said owners of about 300,000 cats were not sure if they were microchipped or not.
Microchipping involves a small chip being "quickly and simply" inserted under the animal's skin to give the pet its own unique code.
The chip can then be scanned and matched to the owner's contact details that are kept on a database.

Narendra Modi has been sworn in as India's prime minister for a third term in a grand ceremony at the presidential palace in Delhi.
The leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party took his oath, saying he would "do right to all manner of people without affection or ill-will".
Mr Modi's BJP-led National Democratic Alliance won the general election with 293 seats, a much lower margin than predicted by exit polls.
The election saw a resurgence of India's opposition, which won 234 seats.
Thousands of guests have been attending his inauguration at Delhi's presidential palace. Among them are the heads of neighbouring Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives - but not Pakistan or China.
Tight security has been in place in Delhi, which was declared a no-fly zone, with more than 2,500 police officers deployed around the venue.
Speaking as he was sworn in by President Draupadi Murmu, Mr Modi said he would uphold the sovereignty and integrity of India and govern with "true faith and allegiance to the constitution".
He said: "I will do right to all manner of people in accordance with the constitution and the law without fear or favour."
A council of ministers of Mr Modi's new cabinet were also sworn in during the ceremony.
Mr Modi, 73, is only the second Indian leader to win a third consecutive term after the country’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
Exit polls had projected outright victory for his Hindu Nationalist BJP party, which ruled India for a decade, but it lost its parliamentary majority in the general election.
His NDA bloc relied on two key allies, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Janata Dal (United) JD(U), to cross the 272-seat mark needed to form the government.
On Friday, the elected MPs voted Mr Modi as the leader of the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the parliament), leader of the BJP parliamentary party, and leader of the NDA.

Rosa (August 1999 – June 5, 2024) was a female sea otter at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. She was known as the aquarium's oldest resident otter, and as a surrogate mother for 15 abandoned otters for the aquarium.
Since Rosa's 20th birthday in 2019, Twitch streamer and YouTuber Douglas Wreden, also known as DougDoug, had hosted annual charity livestreams to raise money for the Monterey Bay Aquarium. These streams contributed to Rosa's popularity. Wreden and his community raised over $14,000 for her 22nd birthday. During his stream celebrating Rosa's 23rd birthday, he and his Twitch viewers raised over $104,000 for the aquarium. In August 2023, Wreden held two streams for Rosa's 24th birthday, raising a total of $302,014.21. In total, Wreden has raised over $420,000 for Monterey Bay Aquarium. He has stated that he plans to do another stream on what would have been her 25th birthday in memorial of Rosa.
Rosa died on June 5, 2024, having been euthanized due to age-related health conditions.
At the time of her death, she was the oldest sea otter at the Monterey Bay Aquarium at 24 years 9 months. She was older than the oldest known male sea otter in the United States, Adaa, who lived to be 22 years 8 months, but not older than the oldest known female otter, Etika, who lived to be approximately 28 years old.
Rosa was born in late August 1999. She was found stranded on a beach in Santa Cruz County, California when she was four weeks and was brought to the aquarium. Rosa weighed five pounds at the time. Rosa was released into the wild at the age of two, but had to be returned to the aquarium two years later because she continued to interact with humans by jumping on swimmers and kayakers, which was a risk to herself and humans.
