One of the world's rarest cats, the Iberian lynx, is no longer classed as endangered, according to a report by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
On Thursday the IUCN, which categorises species according to the level of risk they face in a "red list", bumped the Iberian lynx from "endangered" to "vulnerable" after a significant surge in numbers.
Its population grew from 62 mature individuals in 2001 to 648 in 2022. While young and mature lynx combined now have an estimated population of more than 2,000, the IUCN reports.
As the name suggests, the wild cat species calls the Iberian region - Spain and Portugal - home.
According to the latest census data, external, there were a total of 14 clusters where the animals were stable and reproducing. Of those, 13 were located in Spain and one in Portugal.
The wild cat used to be common across the whole of the Iberian Peninsula, but from the 1960s its numbers plummeted.
Habitat loss, poaching and road accidents all helped to push the species to the brink of extinction.
Now, the cat is coming back.

Wales have sacked manager Rob Page after three and a half years in charge.
Page, 49, led his country to a first World Cup in 64 years and guided them to the second round of Euro 2020.
But he has paid the price for Wales' failure to qualify for Euro 2024, with this month's miserable friendly displays against Gibraltar and Slovakia proving to be the final straw.
Football Association of Wales (FAW) bosses held talks for more than a week before eventually coming to an agreement that a change was needed.
Following an underwhelming performance at the 2022 World Cup, Page faced heavy criticism after an embarrassing home defeat by Armenia during Euro 2024 qualifying.
Wales responded with a memorable victory over Croatia, but their hopes of reaching a third successive European Championship ended in agonising fashion as they were beaten on penalties in the play-off final against Poland in March.
The FAW backed Page in the immediate aftermath of that crushing disappointment, with president Steve Williams saying the former centre-back would be in charge for the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Less than three months down the line, the FAW has decided a change of manager is needed.
Dave Adams, the FAW's chief football officer, said: “I would like to thank Rob for his work with the association over the last seven years, firstly as the under-21s head coach and then onto the role of Cymru [Wales] head coach."
FAW chief executive Noel Mooney said: "On behalf of myself and the entire FAW, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to Rob for his commitment and dedication to his roles for the national teams.
"Under Rob Page's leadership, our Cymru men's team has achieved significant milestones and victories which have created many incredible memories for our nation, most notably our first World Cup in 64 years."
A 58-year-old man has been killed in a suspected bear attack in Japan.
Construction worker Yasuhiro Kobayashi was found in a forest in Nagano Prefecture on Friday afternoon.
He had large wounds on his head and back, a spokesperson from Nagano Central Police Station confirmed.
This is the latest incident in a surge of attacks by the animals, which are increasingly venturing into populated areas.
Mr Kobayashi was found by a colleague who went looking for him when he failed to return to work after visiting a construction site, Japaneses broadcaster NHK reported
According to newspaper Asahi Shimbun, four people were injured in bear attacks in Nagano this month.
Authorities in the prefecture have issued severe warnings to residents not to venture into the mountains at dawn or dusk when bears are most active.
Officials advised residents visiting the mountains to travel in groups and to carry an item that makes a noise, such as a bell.
Bear sightings and incidents happen usually around April when they are awake from hibernation in search of food, and then again in September and October when they eat to store fat for the winter months.
However, reduced yields of acorns - the biggest food source for bears - has made their movements unpredictable.

A woman is in intensive care after being attacked by wolves while jogging in an animal park near Paris, French media report.
They say that early on Sunday the 36-year-old victim - who was staying at a lodge within Thoiry park - strayed into the main safari zone, which is reserved for cars.
She was set upon by three arctic wolves and suffered severe bites to her neck, back and a leg.
Thoiry, about 40km (25 miles) west of Paris, is one of France's most popular wildlife parks. Some 800 animals kept there are allowed to roam free while visitors watch them from the safety of vehicles.
The park offers accommodation near the wolf and bear enclosures, with the lodge area protected by electric fences and ditches, the France Info news site reports.
It is not clear why the woman entered the car-only safari zone. Park authorities have made no comment so far.
"We do not know at this stage whether the guest made a mistake or whether there was a problem with the signposts," an unnamed police source told Le Parisien newspaper.
The woman was rescued after park attendants heard her screams as she was being attacked, and was taken to a nearby hospital.
An investigation is underway.
