So the claimed 20+ point lead actually turned out to be just 10 points.

The worst vote share of any single majority government, ever.

A lower vote share than Corbyn in 2017 - the man Starmer claimed was "unelectable".

Small parties once again done over and under-represented.

Carlo Maria Viganò (born 16 January 1941) is an excommunicated Italian former Catholic Archbishop. He served as Apostolic Nuncio to the United States from 2011 to 2016 and as secretary-general of the Governorate of Vatican City State from 2009 to 2011. He is known for having publicized the Vatican leaks scandal of 2012, in which he revealed financial corruption in the Vatican. He also wrote a widely disseminated letter in 2018 that accused Pope Francis and other Catholic leaders of covering up sexual abuse allegations against former cardinal Theodore McCarrick, although Viganò himself was accused of shielding McCarrick while shifting the blame to Pope Francis. On June 5, 2024, he was officially charged by the Vatican for the crime of schism. On July 5, Viganò was declared guilty and excommunicated.

England stepped back from the brink of a Euro 2024 exit again as they secured a semi-final place with victory over Switzerland on penalties in Dusseldorf.

Gareth Southgate’s side, who were rescued by Jude Bellingham’s spectacular late equaliser in the last 16 against Slovakia, were in trouble once more when Breel Embolo stole in at the far post to put Switzerland ahead with only 15 minutes left.

Bukayo Saka then produced a moment of individual brilliance of the sort England have relied on heavily throughout the tournament to equalise with a fierce low shot five minutes later.

Extra time failed to find a winner, England going through with a set of flawless penalties after goalkeeper Jordan Pickford saved Manuel Akanji’s first spot-kick.

Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Saka and Ivan Toney were all successful before substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold hammered home the decisive penalty in front of England’s delirious supporters.

They can now look forward to a semi-final against the Netherlands.

Jon Landau - the Oscar-winning producer of some of the world's highest-grossing movies of all time, including Titanic and Avatar - has died aged 63.

Landau, who was the long-time producing partner of filmmaker James Cameron, reportedly died on Friday after living with cancer for more than a year.

His sister Tina confirmed his death on social media, calling him "the best brother a girl could ever dream of".

"My heart is broken but also bursting with pride & gratitude for his most extraordinary life, and the love and gifts he gave me - and all who knew him or his films," she wrote.

Landau was the son of Hollywood producers Ely and Edie Landau and for a time was an executive at the film production company 20th Century Fox, overseeing films including The Last Of The Mohicans and Die Hard 2.

Alongside Cameron, he helped to create the 1997 hit Titanic, which was the first film to make it past the $1bn mark at the global box office.

Later films Avatar and its sequel Avatar: The Way of Water, which were released in 2009 and 2022 respectively, went on to break Titanic's record.

Landau also co-produced other hit films including Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and D ick Tracy, and held a management position in Cameron's production company Lightstorm Entertainment.

Following news of Landau's death, Cameron told The Hollywood Reporter that "a great producer and a great human being has left us".

"Jon Landau believed in the dream of cinema. He believed that film is the ultimate human art form, and to make films you have to first be human yourself," he said.

"He will be remembered as much for his vast generosity of spirit as for the movies themselves.”

At least seven people have died after Hurricane Beryl slammed into south-east Texas and Louisiana, knocking out power for nearly three million people.

Beryl hit the southern United States on Monday morning as a category one hurricane, but it has since been downgraded to a tropical depression.

Officials warned of destructive winds, up to 15in (38cm) of rain and "life-threatening" storm surges.

More than 1,100 flights were cancelled at Houston's main airport on Monday, according to flightaware.com.

Some 2.6 million customers in Texas were without power as of Monday night, said poweroutage.us, with some outages also reported in Louisiana.

The storm caused at least 10 deaths in the Caribbean.

Officials said seven people had died in Texas's Harris and Montgomery counties, while one more fatality was confirmed in neighbouring Louisiana.

Lamine Yamal became the youngest goalscorer in European Championship history as Spain beat France in an absorbing contest to reach the final of Euro 2024.

After Randal Kolo Muani headed in Kylian Mbappe's cross to give France an early lead, Yamal curled home a stunning strike from outside the box to write his name into the record books by scoring at the age of 16 years and 362 days.

Yamal's goal came in the 21st minute, and Spain were ahead just four minutes later as Dani Olmo's shot was turned home by France defender Jules Kounde.

France had to come out fighting after a thrilling first half - and they did just that, with Aurelien Tchouameni having a header saved and Mbappe denied from an ambitious effort.

The France captain, playing without a face mask for the first time since breaking his nose at the start of the tournament, had a big chance to equalise late on - but he shot high over the bar in a moment that summed up his recent form.

While Spain have been the most attacking side at the tournament to date, here they showed they have the defence to match as they stayed on course for a fourth European Championship title.

France, for their part, came up short in attack against a side that will take some stopping when they face either England or the Netherlands in Sunday's final.

Microsoft has announced big price rises for Game Pass, its Netflix-style subscription service for games.

The gaming giant, which purchased studio Activision Blizzard for a record $69bn (then £56bn) in 2023, says monthly charges for PC Game Pass will rise by £2 to £9.99, while its premium service, Ultimate, will go up by £2 to £14.99 per month.

It is also replacing its standard subscription tier on Xbox consoles in September, meaning Xbox gamers will now have to subscribe to Game Pass Ultimate if they want access to new games on the day they are released.

It comes after Microsoft announced in May that its most eagerly awaited new title - Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 - would be available straight away to Game Pass subscribers.

Analysts said that represented an attempt to shake-up the industry, which has long been dominated by sales of physical games.

Game Pass, much like Sony's rival PlayStation Plus service, lets console and PC players play hundreds of video games for a monthly subscription fee.

Both can be seen as a "Netflix for games", though gamers can download many of the games available to play, rather than streaming them.

There are around 34 million Game Pass subscribers worldwide - all of them will now have to pay more.
