South Africa's governing African National Congress (ANC) and the main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) have agreed to form a government of national unity, along with two smaller opposition parties.

This follows weeks of speculation about who the ANC would partner with after losing its parliamentary majority for the first time in 30 years, in last month's elections.

It got 40% of the vote, while the DA came second with 22%.

The agreement paves the way for ANC leader Cyril Ramaphosa to remain president.

The Friedkin Group has agreed a deal in principle to complete a takeover of Everton, BBC Sport understands.

Chairman Dan Friedkin, who also owns Roma, is now strong favourite to purchase the Toffees after jumping ahead of four other bidders.

A decision over whether Friedkin wants to exercise the option of buying current owner Farhad Moshiri's 94% stake could come by the weekend, with Friedkin thought to be flexible about the exact structure of any deal.

American businessman Friedkin, who has a reported net worth of £4.8bn, wants Serie A side Roma and Premier League club Everton to sit at the top of a multi-club model.

Moshiri is now expected to grant the group a period of exclusivity.

Friedkin has moved in front of four rival bidders, including UK-based investment firm Vici Private Finance, MSP Sports Capital, local businessmen Andy Bell and George Downing and a consortium involving a Saudi royal.

Scotland wilted in the face of a scorching Germany performance as Steve Clarke's 10-man side opened Euro 2024 with a dismal defeat in Munich.

The tone was set in an electric Allianz Arena after just 10 minutes as Florian Wirtz waltzed on to the ball to steer in the opener.

Jamal Musiala’s ferocious strike almost punctured Angus Gunn’s net, as well as the hearts of the mass of stunned Scots behind the goal, just nine minutes later.

And before the break Kai Havertz slammed in the third from the spot with Ryan Porteous’ red card leaving Scotland with the tallest of mountains to climb.

There was still time for substitute Niclas Fullkrug to hammer high into the net for Germany's fourth, with Antonio Rudiger's late deflected own goal pulling one back.

It was a strike celebrated wildly by the suffering Scotland crowd, only for Emre Can to mute those in dark blue as the game edged into injury time.

That ensured this would be the biggest win in an opening game of a Euros.

Jude Bellingham inspired England to the start they wanted at Euro 2024 with the winning goal and a stunning individual performance in the victory over Serbia in Gelsenkirchen.

Bellingham's dream season – which brought him a Champions League triumph at the end of his first campaign with Real Madrid – continued as he demonstrated exactly why he is regarded as England's new superstar.

The 20-year-old powered on to the end of Bukayo Saka's deflected cross with a magnificent header after 13 minutes as Gareth Southgate's side were rewarded for an impressive opening.

England, who started with Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield, fell back into old habits after the break as they sat back, their reduced intensity allowing Serbia to apply pressure. Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made an important late save from Dusan Vlahovic.

Harry Kane came close to adding a second for England when he saw a header from substitute Jarrod Bowen's cross superbly touched on to the bar by Serbia keeper Predrag Rajkovic.

England will need to improve, but this was at least a result that will send them into their second Group C game against Denmark on Thursday in good heart.

Romania recorded their first victory at a European Championship in 24 years with a stunning win over Ukraine in Group E.

Captain Nicolae Stanciu gave Romania a surprise lead in the 29th minute, finding the top corner with a brilliant strike from 20 yards out.

Razvan Marin then doubled the Tricolours' lead after 53 minutes with a long-range effort that squeezed under Ukraine goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

Romania rounded off the scoring four minutes later when Denis Dragus tapped in Dennis Man's cross from close range.

Their only previous win at the Euros came in 2000 where a late Ionel Ganea penalty helped them beat England 3-2 in the group stage.

Ukraine's players are appearing in their first major tournament since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a full-scale invasion of the country in February 2022.

Last week, their forward Mykhailo Mudryk said his family were facing Russian missiles "day and night" in his home city of Krasnograd.

Dance producer Dario G, whose hits included Sunchyme and Carnaval de Paris, has died at the age of 53.

"He leaves behind a wonderful musical legacy and many happy memories."

Fellow musicians paid tribute underneath the post.

"A true inspiration, he brought joy to so many people and will live on forever through his music," remembered Sigala.

"Paul told me many times over the last year, 'Go get yourself checked,' so I’m passing on that message to anyone reading this, as I’m sure he would want me to."

McDonald's is removing artificial intelligence (AI) powered ordering technology from its drive-through restaurants in the US, after customers shared its comical mishaps online.

A trial of the system, which was developed by IBM and uses voice recognition software to process orders, was announced in 2019.

It has not proved entirely reliable, however, resulting in viral videos of bizarre misinterpreted orders ranging from bacon-topped ice cream to hundreds of dollars worth of chicken nuggets.

McDonald's told franchisees it would remove the tech from the more than 100 restaurants it has been testing it in by the end of July, as first reported by trade publication Restaurant Business, external.

"After thoughtful review, McDonald’s has decided to end our current global partnership with IBM on AOT [Automated Order Taking] beyond this year," the restaurant chain said in a statement.

However, it added it remained confident the tech would still be "part of its restaurants’ future."

"We will continue to evaluate long-term, scalable solutions that will help us make an informed decision on a future voice ordering solution by the end of the year," the statement said.

A mysterious monolith has appeared in the Nevada desert over the weekend, sparking speculation as to what it may be and who is behind it.

The structure was spotted by the Las Vegas Police Department, who said they saw it during a search and rescue mission north of the Las Vegas Valley.

“We see a lot of weird things … but check this out!” the police posted on social media.

The monolith is similar to other similarly puzzling ones that appeared around the globe in 2020.

The tall, rectangular, reflective structure was spotted near Gass Peak, a hiking area in the Nevada desert just about an hour north of Las Vegas.

In pictures released by police on social media, the monolith appeared to be nestled in slightly rugged terrain.

“HOW did it get up there??” the Las Vegas Police Department asked on social media.

The monolith bears some resemblance to those featured in 2001: A Space Odyssey, a 1968 film directed by Stanley Kubrick.

Imposing black monoliths created by an unseen alien species appear in the classic movie, which is based on the writing of novelist Arthur C Clarke.

Monoliths similar to the one in Nevada appeared in different locations around the world about four years ago, including one in the Utah desert.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has made history by appearing at a record sixth European Championship.

The 39-year-old forward was in the starting XI for his side's Group F opener against Czech Republic in Germany on Tuesday.

Ronaldo's international team-mate Pepe also started, meaning at the age of 41 and 113 days he becomes the oldest player in Euros history.

Ronaldo had already scored the most European Championship goals (14) and made the most appearances (25) before the 2024 tournament.

He has now become the first player to feature at six separate Euros - a run that stretches back to 2004.

Prior to the game at Leipzig's Red Bull Arena, Ronaldo's international team-mate Ruben Dias praised his ongoing contribution to the team.

"Cristiano represents the idea that it's possible to dream and achieve great things," said the Manchester City defender.

"It's a pleasure to have him with us. Beyond all those little big things I've mentioned, it's important that he's here with us at this stage of his career."

Nintendo has announced that Princess Zelda is to star in her own game.

For the past 40 years she's lent her name to one of the Japanese gaming giant's most popular series.

But the Legend of Zelda series has cast players as Hylian hero Link.

That's all about to change with Echoes of Wisdom, the new title revealed at the company's Nintendo Direct preview stream.

During a short trailer fans saw Link being swallowed by a supernatural portal, leaving the princess behind.

The game employs the same top-down perspective and cartoon-style graphics seen in the 2019 remake of SNES classic Link's Awakening.

In the trailer, Zelda was seen conjuring up replicas of items and enemies found in the world in order to solve puzzles and battle foes.

A British teenager who is missing in Tenerife was on his first holiday with his friends, his mother has said.

Debbie Duncan's 19-year-old son Jay Slater, from Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, has not been seen or heard from for over 48 hours.

He had flown to the Canary island with friends to attend the NRG music festival.

Search teams, relatives and friends have been looking for the apprentice bricklayer in the mountainous Rural de Teno national park.

Ms Duncan told the PA News Agency: "It’s just traumatic and it doesn’t feel real. It’s just awful, it’s horrendous.

"He’s just a great person who everyone wanted to be with. He’s good looking, he’s a popular boy.”

She added that the police leading the search had been "very good".

Social media posts from Sunday night showed Jay, dressed in a grey t-shirt with green patches on the shoulders, enjoying himself.

Jay’s friend Lucy Mae – who had gone to the island with him to attend the NRG music festival – has said Jay had gone to stay with people he had met on a night out, in the north-west of the island.

She has said she was called by him shortly before 09:00 on Monday to say he was trying to make the 10-hour walk back to their accommodation in the south of the island, but needed water and had only 1% battery life left on his phone.

The call then cut out and Jay has not been seen or heard from since.

His last known location was on a path in the mountainous Rural de Teno national park in the north-west of the island.

Ms Duncan told the BBC: "I've not slept at all, it's like it's not real.

"It was his first holiday abroad with his friends and I was encouraging him to go, I said, 'You will have a great time'."
