All English players? In that case, you're completely wrong and there's nothing to discuss.

If you meant the players who get games for the national side then you're still wrong because a lot are still undervalued in our team.

Kenny wants to lay off the Buckfast then

Forster
Baines
Osman
Huddlestone
Defoe
Welbeck (except by Man Utd fans)

...and that's just by picking a few from the current squad on wikipedia. I could probably name a lot more.

apart from Cole in the list, yes they are overrated players by Sky, BBC and the press

(Hart is mainly overrated by himself, usually)

Also, I bet you've not seen Zaha play more than 1/2 games before you decided he was overrated.

They are all quite average club players in your list, that's the true picture. Defoe on present form looks above average.
Most of those players' ability you can find in abundance in other countries....
We just don't train them right from a young enough age...technically I mean.

English players are only over rated if you believe the hype and BS from the media.

We fail year after year at International level for this very reason. Hype and deluded press. Then blame the manager or a United player for us being knocked out.

We're always invited to the Big party but we're just there to make up the numbers. That's how I look at it.

The top PL teams are great teams because of mainly foreign players. Not exclusively but more or less.

So you didn't actually mean overrated in your title, you just meant there are better players? No one contends that so this is a non-article.

Very true SE85.
I do generally believe it but posted it to see if anyone would bite, especially from a little Englander living in a county/market town....

100% agree.

This is why we win nothing, we think we have world class players when in truth our best player (Rooney) isnt even the best player in the English league.

Rooney, Hart and Gerrard are the only players that get overhyped to the extent of ridicule. I've never seen so many pundits try to label somebody as the best as they have done with Hart. It's embarrassing.

The likes of Cole and Terry were never overrated. They were genuinely up there as the best in their positions at the time. As were Rio and Sol.

Many will believe Wilshere to be overrated but in this case I think it's warranted. His level of technique and performance for his age is excellent.

If you are talking about the media, I agree completely. The papers talk up every English player to such an extent that they are all the 2nd coming of Jesus, delivered to bring great success to English football. Then it all changes when they inevitably fail to live up to those heights.

Most reasonable football fans tend to be more realistic about players' ability.

Wilshere I agree. That boy has serious potential.

posted on 31/12/12

I did mean overrated, loads of players with similar qualities in many countries and loads more of better quality.
Some in that list have undoubtedly improved and are good players but they get so hyped by the media and fans of their own clubs (which is understandable)

To be fair to Hart, he was exceptional last season. But he's been well off the mark this year.

the only english players from the last 10 years that havent been overrated IMO have been

seaman
a. cole
campbell
ferdinand
terry
hargreaves(top class player, underrated if anything when fit)

The players in the list that were considered as being in the top 5/10 in their position in the world were genuinely in the top 5/10 in their position in the world.

The ones in the list who weren't considered as being part of the top bracket but were still considered good players were good players ergo there is no real overrating just, possibly, a sense of over-optimism come tournament times.

Mexican - There's one..yes..Hargreaves..undervalued, jeered by his own supporters until 2006 WC where he was the best English player.
I didn't put Rio in the list..genuine Rolls Royce of a player. As far as I am concerned on the international stage Terry overrated, campbell too. Yes they were good for their country but no more.

You say Hart is over-rated, but if you watch keepers like Neuer you will see a massive similarity in how he is rated and the number of mistakes he makes to Joe Hart.
Neuer is arguably rated higher than Hart by many, but he is a every bit as likely to make a mistake as Hart is.

Even Casillas makes a fair number of errors, and he is rated as best in the world.

There is more negative focus on English players as well as the positive focus.
So in a way English players are both over and under rated.

the fact that Zaha is in the list shows how overrated he has already become. I have seen him play once, and yes, he look pretty promising, (but then United made Palace look like Barcelona that night).

The way the PL has panned out England are becoming like Wales! i.e.. if your English, and play in the top tier, you will probably be considered for England. The current England squad, which I think is the worst we have ever had, has players who wouldn't get near it 10, 20, 30 years ago.

I think Joe would have something to say about that.
