Is Rooney underrated by our fans?

Cavani might just want to play for Napoli

It isn't like he's the only top player who has ever played for them.

They have retired the number 10 shirt for a reason

Matt Le Tissier was utter quality and chose to stay at Southampton too

Judging a player on who he plays for is daft.

Not saying Cavani is better than Rooney though by the way

Danny Welbeck played in front of Rooney last season
.....................................
Completely different issue and unrelated to the main point, a lot of people see Rooney in the same breath as Messi/ Ronaldo etc, he is at the very best on a par with RVP, Cavani etc who have equal or greater success with arguably poorer teams.
So you think that Rooney has kicked on from when first burst on the scene...............talk about blind loyalty to a player

exactly,

napoli have had a decent batch of players over the last 2 seasons or so in cavanni, levezzi and hamsik, nearly all of those players would get into most teams in the world, yet 2 are still at napoli.

as macca says, le tissier was the same at southampton.

I understand that and of course that is correct. But given that the very best players want to win things I wonder why Cavani hasn't joined a club capable of doing that.

Le Tissier was amazing and one of my favourite players but he didn't seem to want to stop being the big fish in a small pond. I know Napoli aren't 'small' but they're unlikely to win a whole lot so I wonder what his reasoning is behind foregoing the chance to win trophies?

People slate Rooney but he is as ambitious as any player and always delivers on the biggest stage.

You would have to ask him. I'm sure there would be many clubs wanting him if he was up for sale. Whether he wants to leave or not, that bares zero relevance on his ability as a player.

Shearer chose Newcastle over United too

Well Maradona had already played for a big club in Barcelona and while at Napoli he won the Serie A twice and also the UEFA Cup which was a lot more highly regarded back then. Cavani's Napoli isn't doing that.

Furthermore, the likes of le Tissier are really the exception to the rule these days. Most players are either eager to test themselves at the highest level and earn a big wage, or clear off to somewhere like Russia and collect a big wage.

napoli are up there with the best teams in italy, and italy is hardly the worst league in the world.

i could understand it if he was playing in the saudi league or in the MLS.

Yeah, again, I agree and i'm not even saying for sure that Cavani isn't a better player than Rooney. How can anyone know?

But my point was until he plays for a bigger club (no disrespect to Napoli) and delivers I can't see why people can be so sure that Cavani is better than Rooney.

He is a far far more complete player than he was. He maybe doesn't have the flair but as a team player, he is second to none.

In the summer before the season he played mainly as a number 9 in front of Berbatov, he had decided he wasn't good enough with his head. So he worked on it all Summer. That season, the results where there for all to see. That's what Wayne does for me, he has added bits to his game to enable him to be a more disciplined and active team player at the possible detriment of him scoring volleys from 40 yards once a season or go on a dribble.

Next game, watch how many converge on Rooney when he's anywhere near the box, and he still manages to evade them when he doesn't have the ball. He drags defenders everywhere, comes deep, goes wide, finds space and people berate him for miscontrolliong a couple of passes a game.

Go watch Norwich away again to see what Wayne Rooney being missing does to the team

First half v Spurs too

Ect.? Please name the rest of the players on their level, because in struggling to think of one. There was a period of about 4 or 5 months when Rooney was being named in the same breath as these, but that was mostly the media.

he is at the very best on a par with RVP, Cavani etc

Is that a bad thing? Christ.

Ever heard of the Ballon d'Or, is there a top 2 then a 2nd league for the rest.

Was about to post that, almost word for word.

People seem to have a selective memory about Rooney, in the early days. Hit and miss, hot headed, made some bad decisions.

He has matured into a fantastic player but some people will only ever want the wonder goals and the occasional bursting runs that he used to do.... Completely forgetting the downsides to his game, back then.

Are you being serious, I was thinking it was down to a poor midfield and the team as a whole having an off day, no one is saying that Wayne Rooney is not a very good player that works very hard for the team and is an effective goal scorer, life is about opinions though.

The gap was so big between the midfield and attack that Norwich just doubled up on the flanks

I said after the game that playing Giggs in CM is baffling most of the time but doing it when Rooney's energy linking the midfield and attack was missing too was suicide.

We played pretty much a flat front two that day and the odd occasion we were successful down the flanks, we were hopelessly outnumbered in the box. Our play through the middle was almost non existant and utterly pedestrian because we were missing a vital cog

Yeah but he was only there a couple of years and only played 50 odd games for them

I am not even sure rooney would make it in an arsenal squad.

Way to come out of the Arsenal closet.

I really wish rooney was gone because that position would be one of the easiest one to improve on the team. All he would need is a first touch and boom already better.

-----------------
The player would need an awful lot more than a sweeter first touch to be a better all round player than Wayne Rooney

I've already spoken about Rooney on another article but on the subject of Cavani and Rooney, while I'm not going to say who's better out of Rooney and Cavani when both are at the top of their game because both play in different positions and in different formations, what I would say though is that Cavani is better in certain areas than Rooney is, as is Rooney better than Cavani in other areas.

Cavani's record in Italy isn't to be sniffed at.

33 goals in each of his first 2 seasons at Napoli is excellent even though it is Serie A and he's set to smash that with less appearances this season having scored 27 goals so far in 26 appearances.

Not bad at all.
