I know that in terms of manufacturing goods this country lost out a long time ago, though that doesnt prevent us from investing in our infrastructure.

==

no it doesnt stop us inverting though it make it rather pointless.

Dont get me wrong I would love it if we got everyone working and a fabulous infrastructure but what is the point of it.......

It would just be there....

Job creation? A better standard of living? For everyone who bangs on about Britian being Great is pretty sad how many dont realise how far we lag behind nearly every other developed country.

You think no one would use an upgraded rail system? Do you think our current road network is fine? People in the highlands would disagree with you(do we not have an issue with pot holes in scotland?). People in london and the surrouding home counties would tell you how poor the public transport system is. People in regional areas would tell you how poor their internet access is. Investment in clean renewable energies would employ people and go towards helping our environment. There are lots we can and should do to improve our infrastructure and thats without loooking a building new schools/hospitals bridges etc etc.

All of these things are used by me and you everyday. Some of it we can be content with how it works at the minute because we are based in the central belt. But in many other parts of the country it needs massive investment.

The only way to stimulate the economy is through public spending not doing what this government did and give that money to the banks to make their accounts look good.

Chuman - just back from the bookies!

Sorry if you thought I was insinuating you dont work was never my intention nor do I believe I said anything that suggested it!

Yes I live in Scotland, yes I vote Tory I didnt realise that my vote was determined by my location!

I do not see any improvement from years of Labour voting in Scotland! As for the "daily mail" reader jibe only after I put down my Telegraph fella

This nonsense of "infrastructure" On the one hand you complain the tories havent shrunk the defecit yet you want a carte blanche loan to fund this "infrastructure" nonsense!

As for the broadband debate again I agree how fast do you want it? What will be the benefit of 4g or fibre optic broadband to most I would say little or none!

100mbps download speeds to what exactly with?
Perhaps it would enable wee Neil to find out which boys team Tuesdays nights referees son plays for but when thats done...........................

More roads? Why? Upgraded rail network? Why it seems fine to me!

Yes my neutering was a jibe but why would you have kids if you cannot provide for yourself? What level of lifestyle would you be providing for your offspring? What example would you be to them?

no more than use it today no..

without a doubt and its very underused.

The infrastructure for public transport in London is good.
Could be better but its still ok.

Internet in the highlands fek me is that what we need to stimulate the economy.

Schools : they have done nothing BUT build new schools in the last 3 years... problem is their are fewer ane fewer kids to go to them..

By all means chuck money at infrastructure that will give nothing in return.

This would IMO be very short term

doing stuff for the sake of doing stuff...

Duke and we would have to pay the lazy kants 40k a year to "make it worth their while to work"

A very large proportion have never had a job neither do they have any intention
-------
How do you actually know this? It gets trotted out all the time like its fact.

32.6% of the unemployed were long term in 2010 whereas it was only 24.1% in 2008 so it actually grew under Labour as they increased the allowance for lazykant syndrome!

The Gov have admitted themselves this is what they should have done, they were told at the time this is what they should have done. Every single recession has ended through infrastructure investment.

I dont know how you can argue against this. Just because you personally dont see a need to improve certain sections of our infrastructure doesnt necessarily mean we shouldnt.

More people are using their cars because its either too expensive to use our rail network or the rail network is unreliable.

People in regional areas would argue with you about how poor our roads are.

Internet access can help small business and open up wider access to services, btg said himself they dont even have cable in peterhead.

Schools and hospitals can be constantly improved and upgraded.

Its not short term because infrastructure helps our overall growth. Doing nothing right now is putting us in a deeper hole.

Im going to post this again just for empathise because it is the truth, The Gov have admitted themselves this is what they should have done, they were told at the time this is what they should have done. Every single recession has ended through infrastructure investment.

Chuman, while admitting there is merit in what you say, doesn't there come a time when you reach saturation point? Isn't it possible that we are already at that point?

Just throwing it out there; far from being an expert on the issue.

European Union is a farce I agree! For example how can a foreigner work in the UK yet get benefits for their offspring in Poland/elsewhere?

------
It is.
Why are people who are working full time still not able to feed their family, yet the companies they work for and who pay them a pittance are posting a profit.

Why is the state subsidising these freeloading companies?

Come on Ally, let me know...you seem to be well up on "scroungers" - how come Tesco are getting free labour from the unemployed paid for by the state?

People who work full time and still not able to feed their family? 40hr week at minimum wage gives c.£250/week
should be able to cope!

Gives you a fair idea of why we are where we are today.

yet the companies they work for and who pay them a pittance are posting a profit - simply if the company didnt post a profit then the worker wouldnt have a job for long!

how come Tesco are getting free labour from the unemployed paid for by the state - ok so the employer takes on someone and gives them experience regardless of the level, the "employee" shows a willingness to work and shows up on time etc etc then they should be in a better position to get a job! Or indeed they could just put on their cv "havent worked cos a cant be bovvered"

Super are you taking into account, rising food costs, energy prices, travel to and from work, childcare costs? Lets not forget about people who are in debt (through their own fault i may add) because of inept bank lending.

posted on 15/2/13

super this gives you an insight into the kind of 'work experience' people are getting from these free labour jobs. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-21427092
