Lex, what exactly is the point of Edu if he doesn't make decisions like this?
I/we can't blame Arteta. He knows he's under intense pressure and he really doesn't need another unknown youngster who might cost him points next season. Wenger could take risks because he was the Motherfacking King at Arsenal. Arteta knows that anything but a great start would probably signal his time over by November.
But what exactly is Edu doing? His job is to safe guard the interests of the club. Now if he sells Saliba for £28m then he's done his job. We might not like it, but at least we have our money back. What does the club get from getting rid of Saliba? Zero.
This whole Saliba issue is more on Edu than anyone else, imo.

Agree with all that tbh.
The manager being sacked shouldn’t necessarily affect the position of a DoF - or Technical Director (whatever the fack that is).
Dodgy performances. Crappy substitutions. Bed results. Losing players’ trust. That should be 100% on Arteta.
However, decisions he is being allowed to make with Arsenal’s young players, our potential future stars, should all be ratified by Edu first. As should our transfers, style of play and what clubs we loan players to.
That’s why for me Arteta isn’t the main problem I have with Saliba’s situation.

We are a club in decline. A manager and I talk in generell needs immediately success to reverse the direction. They trust more experience players. Like Wenger pointed out.

Wenger ruined Senderos and Djourou by playing them too much at a young age, but also never really trusting them.
Also preferred to buy Squillaci, Silvestre and the likes rather than develop young CBs
Senderos and Djourou just weren't good enough to win the Premier League
He should have rested Senderos when we played Chelsea, he probably thought dropping him would be more negative but the battering Drogba would give him seemed to almost traumatise the lad

Wenger was never so far behind to need Arsenal to change to a development strategy.

Not really. Arsenal bought very gifted foreign youngsters. Development strategy I am referring to internal development. From youth teams onwards. English kids.
How many defenders did Wenger successfully develop from Academy, or youngsters to senior players in his 22 seasons at Arsenal?

Ah, developing kids is not a development strategy based on geography.
Of course, Saliba was born and bred in London.
Tbh its only when we got huge inflation in the foreign youth market that we started to try with Wilshere, etc. We let Chelsea get a march on us during that period. Though Chelsea really never used those players in their teams and only used them as an income generator.
Cole and Touré are the two most obvious players.
Koscielny young when we bought him? Sagna?
Bacs and LK were 24/25 when we bought them iirc.
Look, I like Hector, but are we already at him?

Saliba should have been a no miss at £28m. Which is why his case is so strange. He really shouldn't have needed too much developmental work.
Yeah, see I don’t think either Gibbs or Clichy count, as they weren’t that good. Clichy did at least bring in money though...
Okay, Gael Clichy I’ll allow!
Saliba would’ve played under Wenger btw. I’m not suggesting otherwise.

What is the bloody subject here?
Wenger clearly trusted young defenders and saw limited success
The academy hasn't created many decent defenders but he bought many and played them regularly
