We only got Sterling because Chelsea were desperate in the end to get rid of him. That is the truth.

And for sure, I'd rather sell Havertz and replace him. The problem is despite Jenius' attempts to portray him as some absolute beast for us, no club would be as stupid as we were to spend £65m on him and over £300k in wages, so we're stuck with him. He'd probably run out his contract with us, and some club like Leverkusen will get him free, with a big pay cut.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Where did I describe him as a beast? Whether you like it or not, Havertz turns up. Like he did yesterday and a lot more hyped players have flattered to deceive. You just need to look at Odegaard, Jesus, Martinelli and Trossard goal scoring records.

And a player who does that is valuable.

What I am suggesting is a way to get the most out of him because I am quite sure Arteta will not sell him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Jesus, Martinelli and Trossard have come in for a hell of a lot of criticism this season (and last season too, barring Trossard), so not sure what your point is there. Odegaard is having his worst season over the last 3 and he's STILL been better than Havertz.

Of course we have to get the most out of someone that's already in the team that we're paying over 300k a week. Has nothing to do with the fact that he is not good enough for a team who aspires to win the title.

It's the crazy market and compete with clubs who arent living in the real world.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

We are one of those clubs. We bought Pepe for over £72m, Havertz for over £65m (a player Chelsea wanted to get rid of - who we also made our top earner). I'd even include £100m+ for Rice as an example of the current distorted market being out of touch with reality if we're citing other clubs.

No. I want the club to buy better players. We obviously can't bench the mediocre players we have if the other options are even more mediocre. Jesus is a much better striker than Havertz though when in form and I suspect he's not been well managed by Arteta, as he's struggled to find his confidence and form.

My point is for every Odegaard who has been up and down in performance levels, you need a player like Havertz who consistently produces a good level. Nothing spectacular. A Champions League winner nonetheless.

Getting criticism hasn't made Martinelli/Trossard 'perform' any better. And thats not what I was referring to. To pick out a player whose goals have been crucial as the reason for all our problems is nuts. Now I do believe playing him in the striking position without wide players in the mould of Mane/Salah lacked foresight. Which is why I was desperate for us to sign a top striker last summer. I knew teams would adjust. Arteta was a bit delusional last summer.

Should have signed Raphina. I remember a lot of people on here didn’t want us to sign him for some reason.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Havertz doesn't consistently produce a good level. It's just blatantly false. If anything, it's a player like Odegaard that consistently produces 7/10 performances as the lynchpin of our attacking play even if the end product hasn't been there this season.

Neither have I picked Havertz as the reason for all our problems. You seem to be engaging in a lot of strawman arguments. I reserve more criticism for Havertz than a player like Martinelli cos Havertz was signed as a marquee player (and Arteta was clearly personally invested in the signing) and given all his flaws, it's baffling that we wasted that much resources on a mediocre player. Havertz is one of the dumber signings in recent years. Usually when a club makes an underwhelming signing (like a number of signings Man U made like Sancho and Antony, or even us with Pepe), there's the element of the unknown - with the player usually coming from a foreign league where they were the bees knees. Havertz was unique in the sense that the world and his dog knew he was a struggling player at Chelsea and we still went all out for the signing. Utterly baffling stuff.

It'd be like if Chelsea made a £70m offer for Martinelli. Would be pretty nuts. That's how nuts the Havertz deal is.

Hardly, Havertz proved himself at the highest level possible for club prior to joining us. I think Havertz is well past that stage of being a doubtful signing, in hindsight it was a very positive one. It’s Merino/Vieira etc that are/were utter flops and waste of money.

posted 10 hours, 40 minutes ago

Havertz is on course to score 20+ goals in all competitions this season. 13 months ago I would have thought that was unthinkable of that happening but he's not doing too bad.

I watched a sheite ton of Havertz matches at Chelsea and never thought he was anything more than mediocre. I was utterly baffled and pretty mortified when it became clear we were going all out to get him (and every Chelsea forum I read, the overwhelming consensus of their fans was that they were ripping us off). Havertz record at Chelsea is precisely the reason it was a baffling signing - given how mediocre he was there. I might have understood if we got him from Leverkusen.
