Take for example, Nasri's last season for Arsenal, when he hit that patch of goalscoring form. After two or three games, you noticed that the team were looking for Nasri practically every time we were in the attacking half; fair enough, he was in a confident mood and could make things happen - but the single-mindedness of the approach during those few games just made our play predictable and easy to nullify. Then van Persie hit a patch of form, and they started doing it to him... and it goes on like that.
Yes, as you say, every team has a style of play that they stick to - but you need to make use of every facet of that side, rather than just cherrypick those which are immediately effective - otherwise you're easily found out.
