single-mindedness of the approach during those few games just made our play predictable and easy to nullify. Then van Persie hit a patch of form, and they started doing it to him.

KPPR I don't think that happens. And in fact you are ignoring what the opposition does. Quite often its opposing managers who find a method of defending that works against a particular style and adapt to any one player they need to pay attention to. Football is team game. RVP is a good example. He was our main striker and as we play with a lone striker he automatically became a focal point of our attacks. Now one reason our play looks more disjointed since he has left is because of the drop in quality in his replacement. You cannot change style of play to accommodate that drop in quality so our attacking plays has been badly affected for two years now. All players perform a function and role within the playing schemes that Arsene practices in training. And any player not doing his role reduces the ability of the team to function as planned.
