I can understand why people do it when there is a tournament or something similar going on. I tend to get behind most Englishmen/Brits unless I take a particular liking to a certain sportsman, so in a sporting sense I get patriotic.

But all year round? I think it looks silly, as I don't see the point in telling the world, or your estate, the country you're from. Most people I come across with this sort of patriotism do tend to be a bit racist. Not that I'm saying anybody here is, of course.
------------------
Haha I don't do it all year round

I think some are rebelling against the fact some councils in the UK try to stop people from displaying flags etc.

We do seem to have a problem with displaying out identity proudly which is something I've never really understood.

What's so wrong about being proud to British or English, Scottish, Irish and Welsh?

Galv,

It's been upgraded to Oil.

Oil is now a fully recognised religion.

Do keep up.

That story was discredited - just Daily Mail etc inciting outrage.

Oil - an excuse trotted out the 'anti war' lobby anytime a western power goes to war!

I've even heard people claim, "We wouldn't be in Afghanistan if it wasn't for the oil"

Some peoples niavety is astounding!

Get rid of religion and get rid of 80% of wars!!
-------------------
Religion is incidental

It's people that make wars, not religion

Islam gets a bad rep because of a few idiots that exploit it for their own personal evil aims. And it ain't anything to do with their religion either. They are just murderers.

Islam is a very peacful religion

I'm not religious at all by the way.

I'm bothered about tonight and always will be. Just because England aren't very good is no reason to give up on them. Those that do give up on their National side aren't needed anyway

Exactly, I think it doesn't help that the stereotype of a proud Englishman is a fat pasty white guy wearing a wife beater, living in a coucil house on benefit with a St George's Cross hanging out his window and a pitbull barking all day long.

^ this...

And the same goes for club football and for posters like Weare who said (& i quote):

"gave up my season ticket after to many yrs of being sh-it".

Why would any real fan do that?

If you cant afford it, fine. If its inconvenient to get to each week, fair enough. But because the team become worse? WTF...

Poor show that, poor show......straight

Unfortunately, that stereotype does actually exist. Not all those that are proud of their nation are like that, but like that, of course. But the idiots you speak do exist.
