I know it's an extreme case but my point was you can be born 'evil' if there was a malfunction in the development of your brain. I'm sure I've read about studies on the brain of 'evil' people and abnormalities have often been noticed in the brain.

Wasn't Franz Ferdinand WW1? I can't really remember to be honest, I only say Poland because that's what Basil Faulty says and that's all i can remember.

I was taught that the assassination of Franz Ferdinand was a big cause of WW2. Or am I getting confused here?

That was WW1

I've been told. My bad.

Rob did a good job of justifying my mistake, though. Top lad!

Hippo

Did you enjoy the positive 'patriotism' that the WC brought to Germany? I can imagine it was similar to the positive vibe that happened in England last year with the Olympics, there are of course bad parts to patriotism but it can also bring about positively.

Nothing like a good chat about the war to smoke out brummie

Hippo, but nobody is saying they take pride in the bad are they?!

You associate any form of pride in a nations history as being proud of the bad that was caused by extremists!

That doesn't make it had for people to be proud of their history, that makes you retárded for making that assumption.

If people want to feel proud about their history that is their perogative. It doesn't mean they're gonna start invading every foreign country and killing millions of people.

Some people use patriotism for bad, and still do, but that doesn't mean you should taint everyone with the same brush.

Are you proud of the fact there is no patriotism in Germany?

Hitler wasn't bothered about reclaiming land, or even Germany and it's people He was only bothered about personal power.
--------------
that isn't true. he is an absolute mad man but germany (at least what he thought germany was or should be) was all the thought about
---------------------------------------
He wasn't even German. Germany was a tool for his political madness which was fuelled by personal power

He was bothered about Germany because he was in charge of it.

If he was that bothered about Germany and it's people, the German soldiers wouldn't have been fighting the war because being shot was the only other alternative for them

Dressing it up only camouflages the fact he was in it for himself, and his own reasons.

I think Hippo and I differ with the meaning of patriotism.

posted on 26/3/13

But you're supporting the idea that patriotism is bad and you don't need it on the basis of your living in Germany.

This is in itself a form of patriotism.

You can be proud of your history and not been proud of the bad.

That's just stupid to think you cannot.

Wow it's history corner! Anyway, hitler joined the German army straight away for ww1 and not the Austrian army.....just saying!

I've been to Hitler's house of birth in Braunau in Austria and it's literally one of the first places he invaded (as it's on the border with Germany).

Creepy little town.

I've still got a very keen interest in International football, but that's because I follow Poland.

Admitted we're not the greatest side in the world, our or group, but I've been a vivid supporter of our national side for quite some time now.

If anything, my interest in our side has grown over the past few years.

I think people don't have that big an interest any more due to 1: the media in the UK and 2: players.

Everyone knows every single player nowadays. There was a time when I wouldn't recognise anyone who played for any other national side bar a few, now everyone seems to know more or less everything about this Montenegrin side facing England tonight.

Possibly the qualifiers are a disturbance to the club season, but when else do you suggest they are played?

For the record, I'd just like to clarify that I've never killed millions of people for national pride, a drunken dare, financial considerations or any other reason.
