i watched none of euro 2008 apart from some select matches - the boring world cup in south africa put me off tournament football totally.
-----
i meant euro 2012
people used to get behind England when club 'rivalry' was a lot more 'intense' than it is today
Not so magic, but that doesn't always apply to the hardcore fans of club teams. I get what you're saying but it's hard to quantify.
When they put on that white shirt, every English fan in the country should be right behind them.
----
We are tribal, especially at the top clubs, but this is true. I don't like Gerrard or Terry but I support them when they play for England as they represent my country.
Maybe I'm more patriotic than others, though.
yea 1 headline isn't over hyped
I read on here rubbish about how England have got a chance at the world cup in 2014... HOW? do you know 11 secret unbelievable english players that are joining the team?
I think you have a point about the fact that watching England is boring, I watched the 8 - 0 san marino game... and it was boring, seriously, it was boring... England were never going to lose or draw, we were going to win, and it was so one sided, it was boring.
It's crazy Darren, for the past few years I've seen fans wanting Gerrard replaced, despite being arguably England's best player.
If I were English for example, I wouldn't dream of not having Terry, Cole, Rooney and Gerrard in the team. However others want them replaced.

Do you think it was boring though?
I didn't bother watching England vs San Marino seemed very little point. I will be watching and cheering England on tonight though, hope we can get that top place although the play offs are seeded so I would still fancy our chances.
England are incredibly boring to watch usually, don't think I have really enjoyed our performance in a competitive match for quite a few years...
I care, not as much as I do about Manchester United but I still care.
To be fair, the San Marino game was just as boring as watching Barca do that tippy tappy crap. All good fun when they make a string of killer passes leading to a nice goal, but the rest of the time they're just kicking it in bloody triangles.
To be fair, TOOR, from a footballing point of view I can understand why some people want some of those players moved on.
Obviously they still have something to offer - the older players - but people want to see a fresher looking England for both the present and the future. This is understandable.
Many people feel let down by the golden generation, so once again, their view point is understandable.
That's a purely footballing thing, much like it is when we want Scholes and Giggs to retire - the difference is that they're still fully supported even if they aren't wanted in the team.
England players don't get the same luxary.
Yes, I get that point but this is international football not club football - players aren't losing value. You play your best team, no matter what age and the younger players in the squad learn from them.
If I were English for example, I wouldn't dream of not having Terry, Cole, Rooney and Gerrard in the team. However others want them replaced.
.................................
I can somewhat understand it based on age, Rooney aside the rest of them could just about make the next international tournament although they would be on their way down and their replacements would be on their way up (also needing some tournament experience under their belts in preparation for the next one...)
That isn't to say I want rid of them all but I can understand replacing one or two of them..
I would keep Gerrard and Cole in for Brazil...
Jay
That's hardly englands fault. San Marino just packed the defense so England had to try and use decent passing to get past the masses
i have to confess i have never really cared much, although when i was younger i wanted england to do well. these days i would rather spurs win a corner than england win a game, it matters that little.
infact i would rather spurs win a penalty than england win the world cup. its a bit sad to be honest.
-----------
I think the Champions League has pretty much over taken international football. I find CL a lot more entertaining than the international tournaments. But World Cup still edges CL for me. Just though due to its history and prestige.
But overall international isn't the same as it used to be. Also the fact we don't see the Old Brazil maybe a factor. No denying that the Samba Brazillians are better than any nation to watch including Spain.
Don't worry Hippo I got the message!!
Know it's not the same for everyone, just personally I don't have the same enthusiasm these days as when I was a kid.
Growing up sucks, basically.
To be fair, the San Marino game was just as boring as watching Barca do that tippy tappy crap.

This.
I know Rob, it doesn't change the fact that for all the goals scored, it was dire as a spectacle and that fecking band didn't s tfu.
Lets just see what Hodgson does tonight, to be fair to him he's actually doing a decent job with England
No denying that the Samba Brazillians are better than any nation to watch including Spain.
__________
I respect Spain for what they;ve achieved but I'l never like them as much as I liked watching Brazil.

If we want to win the World Cup, we need Joey Barton in the team.
As has been mentioned before the characters have gone from the game and those coming in have been controlled throughout their lives.
A professional footballer nowadays only needs to show a tad above average level of promise to be elevated to hero status.
Bar wiping their backsides for them, they get everything done for them in their lives and are told what to say and do, so much so that they become less of a personality and fans cannot relate to.
The only time Lamps has been in the papers over his private life was when he left his fiancee whom he had kids with. The papers made up some stuff about him not wanting to look after his kids or something and he ended up calling a radio presenter to take him to task over the allegations. Thats the last thing i can remember him being in the papers for in a negative light and it was false. You probably want him to be a $cumbag though he just isn't, accept it
I also don't understand this overhyped business, although I don't read papers, I do see headlines and extracts on websites and it also seems like the media like to talk about how crap England are, so much so that there's a bit of ridicule involved. This has spilled over into the sheep.
TOOR, but if people no longer think they're the best players then it's their right to say they would rather see someone else playing.
Personally I think Gerrard has a role to play at the next world cup and so does Cole. The others less so.
I wouldn't even start Gerrard, I think Carrick, Cleverly and Wilshere would be England's best midfield. But that doesn't mean I won't support whoever starts.
Even if it's one of the worst midfielders in the league - Scott Parker.
"ended up calling a radio presenter to take him to task over the allegations"
That was hilarious.
The time Carragher did it was hilarious also.
