Are Utd vulnerable without Ferd & Vidic

™ju§t,

So basically, Cleverley's chance from distance counts but Spurs numerous efforts dont?

That is a strange way to go about comparing.

You should also note, Spurs scored 4 MORE goals from outside the area, than any other Prem team last year - so claiming shots from distance dont count is a bit silly. A shot from distance is a chance, regardless of whether De Gea spills it, it hits the woodwork, or it misses the target.

I'm not sure we would have been allowed them chances had Rio & Vidic been playing though.

Van Der Vaart shooting from 50 yards - was hardly expansive play that help Spuds go forward was it. Spurs, ok for an hour, tonked for the last 30 minutes and totally outclassed.

Giggs,

The 50 yard shot was in the second half. The turn & shot from inside the box was in the first half. Admittedly, it was too central to trouble De Gea but it was a chance, an opening, nethertheless.

Did you watch the game or just the highlights?

This bit i agree with though. No question.

Yep

& keeping Modric aint gonna paper over the cracks either...

Sheriff

I dont think there are any "cracks". We lost to United at Old Trafford, mate - not Swansea at home.

Personally I thinks spurs have got a decent team without him, not that he's going anywhere anyway!

™ju§t,

I agree. But Modric's just got that extra bit of class that every great team needs. Whilst we have the power to keep him (a contract), then we should do everything we can to do just that.

posted on 25/8/11

If I had a choice I'd rather take vdv than modric to be honest, not saying I don't rate him, I just prefer vdv's style

Its funny, the Chelsea board claim VdV has no technique & wouldn't take him on a free.

Well that's chelsea fans for you! If they had had him in their side last year they might have won the league!

™ju§t,

I thought Spurs chances far outweighed United's in the first half, VdV had a good chance & so did Bale. Apart from Cleverley's (unrealistic shot from distance)
..............................................................
I did watch the game thanks very much and then i watched it on tv the next day. Spurs kept up with United for an hour, United started to play and blew spuds away. End of. Cleverley's unrealistic shot from distance that got Big brad making fingertip save.... was considerably more realistic bit of shooting than Van Der Vaarts! Bale was anonymous for most of the game, Kranjcar tired after an hour as did Livermore, they stopped tracking back, Defoe was not really a threat and Evra nullified Lennon. United did ok for an hour, but that was the best Spurs could do, when we chose to play we were a different class as the rest of the season will prove. But so it isn't all negative for you Friedel was fantastic.

Cleverley's unrealistic shot from distance that got Big brad making fingertip save

===============================

I didn't say it was "unrealistic", i was simply told (by either you or another Utd fan on here) that shots from outside the box do not count & are "unrealistic" attempts at goal.

Its a tad biased to only include your own shots as attempts at goal, and not the opposition's. Just because one goalie makes a save from one, and another fizzles a yard wide, they are all attempt at goal.

As i said before, Spurs scored 4 MORE goals from outside the box than ANY other Prem team last year, so a shot from outside the box, in our eyes, would certainly count as a goal attempt.

posted on 25/8/11

It wasn't me, but for the record, i agree that statistically they all count but realistically a 50 yarder is 9 times out of 10 likely to be better used as a pass to create something. If everyone shot from such a distance you may have the most shots on goal, but likely the least goals scored. I am not having a go at any other play but once or twice Van Der Vaart was taking the **** a bit with some of those shots, it was wastefull and a few times in the final third, Spurs made some bad choices with their final pass.

posted on 25/8/11

Giggs,

I agree that 50 yarders would create a bit of a fake stat but Defoe had a long range shot that went a yard wide & VdV had an 18 yard shot that was just too near the centre of the goal (and the goalie). These were all chances, or attempts at goal, that should not be disregarded - just like Cleverley's shouldn't.

Did you see redknapps face after that wasteful free kick vdv took by having a shot from a ridiculous distance when spurs had players in position ready for a cross and the defenders had come all that way for nothing! He wasn't best pleased!

posted on 25/8/11

™ju§t,

I love that face. It must be what other managers are feeling from time to time, but they just keep it in. But just like Sunday League, the manager should be able to just shout "What the flipping 'eck was that?"...but maybe not burst out laughing, like you would on a Sunday.

posted on 25/8/11

Agreed! It got me thinking if players could only heard what managers said about them from the bench, they probably wouldn't speak to the manager ever again.
I remember last season fergie laughing at berba sitting languidly on the bench then nudging phelan and saying something then both of them laughing!
I had to rewind that a few times it made me laugh so much

posted on 25/8/11

I remember that too.I bet Fergie & Phelo take the proper pi$$ out of Berba in training while he just stands around sulking.

posted on 25/8/11

I don't he does stand around sulking to be honest, having seen rio's video diary of united on tour berba seems to do the opposite, he just seems happy just to be at united!

*think

posted on 25/8/11

Yeah he seems happy for now but you must wonder, how much of his confidence is getting chipped away at after each match where he starts as a sub.. He basically knows now he's a sub. Last seasons joint golden boot winner to sub.

posted on 25/8/11

Very true, especially when you see welbeck start before him. He's not a great sub to have either if you need him to come on and score.
Anyone's going to find it difficult coming to terms being 4th or 5th choice after ending the season before top scorer. I feel sorry for him because he seems to have had a great attitude whilst he's been with us

Manchester United 8 - 2 Arsenal ...... the answer to the article is NO!

To be fair, the United defence was far from secure throughout.

It's just that Arsenal's was Conference standard
