Go do a thread based around the fact you think that you cant play football if you can;t play and then add in that Shearer Beckham Robbo Keano and Ian Rush were good goal scorers but not great players

macca, thats exactly what you said.

You seem to think I and others don't rate Rooney, no I personally don't think he should be paid the wages he is that's not to say he isn't a top player. Also when discussing whther he is world class, you have to think where do you cut the line at that level. Ibrahimovic is world class, is Rooney as good?

posted on 28/2/14

Simple

Rooney isn't W/C at the moment, for sure, he was a few years back.

Is he worth what we are paying, probably not.

But, and this really is the crux of the matter, if we want to compete with the oil clubs, we are going to have to pay top wages. And I bet Stretty said similar to this during the transfer windows.

Now, could we get a better player than Rooney, for the money we are paying him.

Maybe. Maybe not.

Would we be able to guarantee the player would settle at United, fit in and adapt to the prem, or be as good as Rooney?

Probably not.

Kagawa is a great example of a player who just looks like he will not adapt to the prem.

Thats the point ove made.

Does his ability warrant him being on a wage par with the likes of messi and ronaldo?

..............

No, it doesn't.

But then, like you, I have no idea what wage Rooney is on, let alone messi and Ronaldo, so I don't have issues with it.

I am really not sure why you have an issue with what players are paid.

The only issue I think any of us can really have is whether the player earns it.

What we can say about Rooney is that over his time at OT, he has earnt every penny he has been paid by the club.

I fully expect you to disagree.

posted on 28/2/14

I do disagree. If he was on a flat rate of about 80k then i would agree.

I understand your point Vidicschin and it's a good one, wages will continue to rise of all the top players with the money now in football, not for one minute do I want him to leave, my point is more of the status he has at the club effects playing time he gets, regardless of how he plays.

I only have two criticisms of Rooney really and one is not all down to him:
1. He doesn't produce enough world class moments to earn his wage and the way his status at the club impacts his playing time. Don't think it can be argued if Kagawa had put in some of Rooney's performances he would have been dropped.

2. I feel the system we play is used to accommodate what he requires and not what is best for the team, as a No.9 I feel the whole squad would be better utilised as more creativity behind him and movement.

Also, people say Kagawa cannot adapt to the league. You can't expect him to play sparingly and produce when he is being played out of position and not in his best, like putting Rooney at LM. However, I could be wrong as I probably slightly overrate Kagawa to some, always believe he could be mentioned in the same breath as Silva if played consistently but will be laughed at.

Stretty

He hasn;t had a pay rise per se

And while he was on '250k' a week, you stated you didn't want him gone because we wouldn't be able to replace him for the 25 mill we'd get for him

3 points on this

1. You didn't seem to mind his last wage considering you didn;t want him gone

2. There was a chance in holy hell United would have sold Wayne Rooney for 25 mill. It would have taken a ridiculous bid to get United to sell.

3. You are reading too much into this 300k nonsense. Even if he were to get anything close to that, it would mean that we would have to win an awful lot of trophies over the period of his contract or do you seriosuly believe that one of the most marketable footballers on the planet just has a straightforward basic contract of 300k a week and none of that whatsoever is paid in bonuses based on what United actually achive in those 5 years, and not of it is based on image rights with the club already being fully aware of how much the club make just because of wayne Rooney playing there?

The media want to simplify it because Rooney being an ass sells papers

Another example of press nonsense

For years the media claimed United's debt was 750 mill. It never was. 250m of it was a Glazer personal debt. It was never leveraged against the football club yet it did not stop the press reporting that United's debt was 750m

They do it because it sounds better

Now

If you were to make a wild stab of a football players slary off 300k like rooneys, how would you say the 300k is made up? Just a wild stab will do

I dont want him gone now, ive never said that, highlighting though he isnt world class and isnt worht nearly that much money. Youve taken offence at this for some reason. when in truth all ive said is i dont think hes top bracket of world footballers.

ANything over 100k for me and he is overpaid.

He certainly shouldnt be on 250k or however much.

Simple

I apologise for grouping you in with the simpletons like Stretty and his backup anti-moyes crew

You clearly are here for debate and I mistook you for one of Stretty's childish friends

Nice post that was by the way

refreshing to see someone prepared to put down explanations rather than tedious cliches

Ive done it properly, i didnt mention those players, why would i describe them? How many of those were top class wingers and strikers anyway?

Rooney hasn't been world class for a while now, that doesn't mean he isn't one of our best players. RVP was world class last year but even he seems to have lost his mojo recently.

The thing with Rooney is he has been a huge figure for the club and has had a great career with us. He will go down as one of the most influential players we've ever had here. He is still a very good player but he's not what he once was, fans will remain highly supportive of him because of his status and what he's done for us - even when he has bad games.

However I think as time goes on he will decline more but still be rooted to that #10 position, because you can't just drop someone like Rooney. This could become a big problem, especially when we could be looking to build a new team around younger more talented players.

Who seriously uses these weird metaphors to describe a football debate.

It's like people on here are wannabe rappers using football discussions as practice.
