Whereas like all auto drivers. You like to make it hard in yourself
...........
It is most likely an impossibility, but I bet you have tried it yourself, haven't you?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You're right. I tried. And failed. Turns out you were right, it's much easier with 2 men.
I'll take your word for it next time.

............
Not my word, you came to that conclusion yourself.
I can't take credit where it isn't due.
Hands up who's got flappy paddles
Believe me, that isn't hard VC.
...........
I never said it was hard. We have already covered this bit conor. I said it is harder.
..................
Sounds like you had a lot of trouble driving manuals in your younger years.
.................
I haven't discussed my driving of a manual, so I am not sure how you have leapt to that conclusion.
As it happens I never had any trouble what so ever.
Took my test after one week of driving lessons and passed first time, in an Army Landover, which is much harder to gear change than any car I have since driven.
So, no, no trouble at all.

Well I was only basing it on what you said VC, such as saying putting a car into first gear and leaving it is making life hard for yourself.
And we already know that you were constantly spilling drinks when you were driving manuals.

Ahhh Army Landrover's don't have cupholders do they VC?
Flappy paddles are on the more expensive cars...
People are called on here enough without being typecast as a "....." driving
My first car was a mk1 Astra, no power steering, I drive HGV's as part of my job and they are easier than that astra

You got me with that one conor. I should have said harder on yourself, as opposed to hard.

No idea, I haven't driven one for twenty years.
I love driving a manual car and wouldn't change it for an automatic. I like the idea of actually driving, if you know what I mean.
My cousin came over from Canada and she was very impressed I had a manual car. I was bemused, but she mentioned how in Canada the perception of having a manual car and driving it was considered cool. Weird!
As cool as a mullet sporting ice hockey player?

I said exactly the same thing when I first arrived in the USA.
Funny how your perception changes when stuck in traffic on a daily basis.
I now wouldn't ever want to drive a manual in city traffic.
How old are you VC? You said you switched from manual to automatic when you were 38 but never mentioned how long ago that was

VC can remember starting his first car with a Starting Handle
You can't bump start an automatic if you leave your lights on etc (ie get a flat battery).
Now 'm going to presume, after 7 lessons, you have no idea what bump starting is ;
- You'll need to be on a hill or have at least 1 other person with you.
- if you're on a hill, release the handbrake & coast until you're up to about 8-10 mphs (depending on hill steepness, you may need to give it a running push for a bit then jump in)
- if you aren't on a hill & have at least 1 other person with you, get them to push you (until you reach 8-10 mphs).
- turn on the ignition, drop the clutch & put it in 2nd (not 1st, bites too hard, you'll stall it)
- when you've got a reasonable speed up, realease the clutch (not subtly as if you were changing gear, literally pull your foot off).
- when the engine kicks in (& it should), gun the accelerator (as it's in 2nd it;ll be a bit clanky at that spped, hence gunning the accelerator).
- once your confident the engine is running, drop the clutch again & put in appropriate gear.
- driving around will charge the battery, so you should be sorted (as long as you don't stall it not long after getting going).
Or you could buy some jump cables (only useful if there's someone else in your proximity with a car) or call the AA, RAC etc & wait for 4 hours

Ah ha! Well that is where I have the benefit with my manual car and it's equipped cup holders. I only briefly lift the coffee to take a drink. Whereas VC in is auto, feeling all smug that he can hold his cup permanently, is likely to be seen holding the cup by a police officer.
