The lesson to be learn't here was that if you are bone idle, don't want to spill your coffee/ beer or whatever and want to do the minimum amount involved in driving, then go auto.

On the other hand if want to do far more than is required, constantly have to stop start, resulting in spilled liquids, unnessesary hand and foot movement then drive a gear stick.

Spilled liquids

I think the general consensus seems to be stick with a manual for a bit - you'll be a better driver for it long run, then move over to an auto later on. But its completely preferential

would have thaught it was a no brainer to prefer autos over manual.
------------------------
Did you happen to have a hard time trying to learn how to drive a manual?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
not at all and i drive small trucks occasionally

driving to me is just an exercise in getting from a to b and autos make it easier

There's no need to be a pedantic bëllend about it VC, most people are agreeing with you and you're just being argumentative for the sake of it

All I'm saying is I enjoy driving a manual. That doesn't make me an idiot, its just preference

How did this get so many comments?

I had an automatic once, a 2005 C Class and it cost me £1600 to have the clutch fixed.

I haven't brought one since.

At least to me, driving a manual adds a slight enjoyment in getting from A to B that I don't get from automatics.

If only I could figure out how to stop spilling my drink while driving them though

Looks like VC isn't a bed wetter though at least - he was just spilling drinks down his lap

Oh, so my point about autos being ridiculously expensive to fix has been touched upon?

Imagine if this was actually multi-board

Guarantee the Gooners all prefer automatics though

Or they don't have an opinion because they've never driven before

No, it has just been VC saying that "everyone who drives a manual will spill their drinks" and the rest of us saying "no you won't" and giving reasons as to why most normal people can use a cupholder to hold their beverage and take a drink when they want, after which replacing the cup in said cupholder.

So, yeah anyway. Expense is a very good point

...............

That was due to your drink being in your cup holder due to your lack of available hands to pick it up.

One hand will be unavailable as it is on the steering wheel, just as it would be in your auto. With my cup safely in the cupholder, I am at will to pick up the cup and place it back in the cupholder as I so wish.

Laugh

'Automatics '

At least we might have got some ridiculous stats out of Peterbaey

'Miles driven in manual cars in 2013: 98856704

Drink spillages in manual cars in 2013: 7

Miles driven in automatic cars in 2013: 3007

Drink spillages in automatic cars in 2013: 6

Discuss.'

auto transmissions are expensive when they break but manual engine repairs can be equally as expensive depending on what the problem is.

a refurbed manual gearbox will cost you about a grand, maybe 2 tops depending on what car you have. BB paid £1600 for a clutch

You have to go to Mercedes approved garages for their automatics.

you can be unlucky in any car auto or manual when they start giving you problems. If autos were that unreliable millions of people around the world wouldnt be driving them.

Of course, they aren't any more reliable/unreliable than manuals but the cost to repair the part(s) which differ the two (i.e clutch/gearbox) are likely to be more expensive on an auto.

Well, that isn't really true, is it?

You are reliant on whether you have to change gears or not.

Seems an inconvenience to me. One I don't have in an auto.

posted on 13/3/14

I've driven both an I would say it's situation dependent for me.

Motorways or long journeys then automatic cars are so much better.

But other than that I prefer manuals. Stops driving from getting boring if nothing else.
