manuals, you get more of a buzz out of them
automatics are slower to pick up in speed
------
Not anymore, as the ones with gear shift paddles allow far far quicker gear shifts.
I find myself driving in "manual mode" anyway with these.

so, basically you prefer a manual then?
I guess I just don't understand this "inconvenience" of having to change gears.
Hippo, you make it sound like a labourious task that pi55es you off. I don't even think about it, it's just something I do.

in a manual i put my foot down, then take my foot off the gas, put my foot on the clutch, change gears, put my foot back on the gas, the accelerate for a bit, then do it all again.
--------------------------------
this makes it sound laborious. In reality it takes about half a second and comes naturally to anyone driving for longer than about 3 months.

Knew it would happen.
To be honest, the only information of worth I actually garnered from this thread was that, between the ages if 16 and 38, VC regularly spilt his drink whilst driving.

Well said, I think we can all agree on that. Try telling VC...
you stil need to use your feet and your hand to control the wheel
Mr C
That explains the eratic driving in the UK, then.

I haven't argued against anyones taste. In fact I did say each tio their own earlier.
I have just argued which is easier to drive.
The clue is in the word, automatic.

Fair do's. In that case we are all in agreement that some prefer manual and some automatic
Hope Arab has managed to make his decision.
And VC, no one has denied that automatics are easier, just that the ease doesn't outweigh the benefits of manuals (which is a matter of opinion).
It was only really your coffee analogy that got people arguing.
My grandma got an automatic cos as she slowed down with old age she found trying to do a few things at once in a manual a bit too much, much like VC.
Its obvious that automatics are easier to drive and one day I'll no doubt end up owning one and loving it, but right now I enjoy driving and I can't imagine enjoying it if I was in an auto, I think I'd find it really dull.
Anyway, home time for me after a day of doing naff all thanks to this thread.

I think you are confusing 'to much' with unnessesary.
Maybe your granny is on to something that you might figure out once you get older.
Don't think I've ever had a thread reach so many comments without it being a match thread, was a good discussion point regardless.
Hope you learned something Arab
See you all later
Well yeah its unnecessary nowadays, but she admits doing it all confused her which is why she prefers the auto as she only has to concentrate on one thing.
I don't doubt one day I'll come around to your way of thinking but for now I wouldn't wanna
would have thaught it was a no brainer to prefer autos over manual.

The lesson to be learn't here was that if you are bone idle, don't want to spill your coffee/ beer or whatever and want to do the minimum amount involved in driving, then go auto.
On the other hand if want to do far more than is required, constantly have to stop start, resulting in spilled liquids, unnessesary hand and foot movement then drive a gear stick.
