We absolutely need a CB who is quick and can defend the channels when the fullback is out of position. We don't want Williams or Phillips defending 1v1 against Rashford, Martial or any other quick winger. We have seen them against Grant and Wilson and they both were beaten for pace.

The rationale is that we'll never sign someone for the sake of 3 months and who, when vvd and Gomez are fit wouldn't get in the team. If someone who would make a difference to our side long term is available, and we would sign no matter our circumstances, then I'm sure we'd get it done. It was the same last summer. We needed another forward. We got pretty lucky with our front 3 staying fit. This summer Jota was someone we could get who ticked the boxes so we signed him.

Wouldn't get into the team ahead of Gomez? I don't think Gomez is so good we couldn't possibly find somebody better, and with the injury record of both him and Matip I'd suggest any player we sign will have a good chance of making a run at the first team.

Most teams have 4 centre backs to pick from, I'm sure it's something Fergie said once that he always wanted 4. I still don't like Fabinho at centre back, just because of what we lose in midfield.

Not how it works. There is a premium that we'd have to pay, and that is before teams know we're in need of a CB. Suarez was done in October and pushed through because Ajax were out of the CL and he was being difficult. VVD was all but done in the summer until we blew it by meeting him without agreeing with Southampton.

Personally, I don't believe we can win the PL without signing a centre back. VVD is not going to play this season (certainly not as his best), Gomez certainly won't and Matip will give us at best 80% of the remaining games.

Both Van Dijk and Matip are 29 so reaching their peak and Gomez is the only young CB we have that should be getting regular games for us.

The other options we have are weakening our midfield by moving Fabinho there or playing 2 kids who wouldn't be close to the first team without it being the sort of dire situation we are facing now.

There is easily room for a central defender, Lovren get games last year and any CB we sign now will too.

Factor all that in and I think we should be paying whatever premium we need to. We will earn more than that by winning the league again anyway.

Would be nice but unlikely to happen. We've played with Fab and Matip before and had no issue with pace so there are things we can do. We all know the situation is a long way from ideal but we also know the philosophy of the club Will never mean we buy for the sake of it.

Fabinho and Matip are much quicker than Phillips and Williams. They both guard space rather than a man and their positioning is very good and helps them to cut out the passing lanes which stops the 1v1.

We need a CB for the short and long term at this moment.

Not a chance. They're still well in touch of CL and through to the knockout stages this season. He'll get until the end of the season.
