Social media companies do need to do something about racist abuse and other evils on their platforms though.

What lawsuit would be brought up for anonymity to end? You are not really anonymous anyway as soon a crime is alleged because people investigating will then have access to IP addresses, but in general people like anonymity within the law and I don't see what lawsuit would come up to stop that.

Naaah, people use VPNs and sheet so you can't know who it was.

One day someone will suffer some damage and sue the social media companies, arguing it's their duty to stop that damage or at least they should have had reasonable measures in place to stop or from happening.

Will probably go all the way to supreme court but win or lose, the end result will be some form of registration that ties an account to a particular identifiable user.

Personal info would only be revealed to investigators in the event that a crime has taken place, not just available all the time to anyone.

I wasn’t referring to Fred tbf, just the fact I didn’t think of this place as social media but in reality by definition it is.

Of course it is.

But in a manner of speaking when someone says social media blackout, it's a bit obvious which elements of social media he is referring to.

Google and Apple weren't happy with it entertaining anti Semitic groups like the Proud Boys sub group "6MWE" (Six million wasn't enough) so they removed it's app from their stores.

That was shortly followed by Amazon checking the parler data held on its servers, believing the content they found there broke their code of conduct/ethics/whatever they deleted it. Surprised it hasn't popped up on a new server farm, but I guess they won't want the bad press for allowing it back up.

The whole point of the site was that it wasn't moderated (apart from left wing views which were deleted, and the account banned) so some pretty disgusting views were being aired.

does every country have 'hate speech laws'? what if the person is from a country that doesnt give a f

If you're using the platform then you consent to be bound by the laws applicable on that platform, whatever those laws may be. They probably can't put you in jail as that would require extradition lol but they can permaban you.

Maybe it is maybe it isn't. We can never know because of the anonymity.

It even allows Russia and other entities to create thousands and thousands of troll accounts and actually influence the outcome of an election or control opinion on certain issues. I think some of that is going on in the UK personally. We underestimate these things perhaps.
