Surely GB is just a wum.

Unless you think Adam is better than Modric.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Or Carroll is better than Aguero.

Or Liverpool won't win the league

I'll be surprised if both sides don't cancel each other out in the heat and we get a rather drab draw. I find we draw too many games as it is under Hodge, so against an Italy side we'll be that bit more defensive rather than offensive.

I'm a huge Pirlo fan and always have been

But the love in over his performance against England last time out is ridiculous as it was Roy's idiotic tactics of not letting anyone within 10 yards of Pirlo and giving him a minimum of 45 seconds to pick out uncontested passes that explained the performance twice as much as whatever Italy did.

If Italy used the same tactics on us next week we could probably drag Beckham out of retirement and he'd pick out players all day long too.

If you give grandad passmaster no pressure or time limit he'll find the pass everytime.

The love in with Pirlo is nothing to do with his performance 2 years ago, it's the 10+ years of Genius he's produced for club and country

Barf....really? You lot are like sheep, unable to think andgive aadequate reasons for an opinion; just follow the popular choice, its easy.

For instance, have u considered Gerrard has played his whole career in the hardest, fastest league in the world? Whilst doing this at his peak he was considered europes best, he scores, passes long short, tackles actually grabs games by the scruff of the neck and wins them...hell he even played rb and was our best! He played wide and scored a shed load.

Pirlo plays in a slow tempo league, its much easier than in England....you have much more time, yet I have never seen pirlo do what gerrard has done; yet you dismiss this because its,,,,, ohhhh, pirlo!! Look at the players over their careers, gerard capable and has done more on a football pitch than pirlo ever can dream of.

You're acting like it's easy to stop Pirlo doing what he does. I'm surprised nobody has ever thought of closing Pirlo down all this time he's been running the midfield.

Spurtle, yeah you could be right. The problem we'll have is that even though we are probably a fitter side than Italy they'll dominate possession and so can tire us out with the ball.

Draw is probably a likely result.

TKT,

The Beckham example does him a huge disservice in my opinion. Not many even with time & space afforded will do what he does.

The 'love-in' for me goes back primarily to 2006 in a largely un-fancied Italian side he was a class apart. Somehow, his performances in that World Cup go slightly under the radar.

Italy will probably start with

Buffon

Darmian-Bonucci-Chiellini-De Sciglio

--------------------Pirlo-----------------------

-------De Rossi-Motta-Marchisio--------

-------------Cassano--Balotelli-----------
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This seems extremely defensive..

Darren you can just imagine it'll be Hodgson's mentality not to lose the match most importantly, in the first game in a tough group. I too think Italy will have more possession and probably the better chances, but we'll get away with a draw. It's possible with the right subs we could nick it. I'm not sure if Hodgson would going for the attack near the end of the match if we're drawing though.

Yep I agree. A draw would be a good result, though.

It's a good advantage having Costa Rica in the last game as it could come down to goal difference so at least we'd know before the game how many we may need to get through.

Pirlo has went from being a great player to a god after the media indoctrinated the English after the last World Cup. England's tactics were woeful that night and exactly what Pirlo needed to perform.

Gerrard is being massively underrated but then he always has for England. Gerrard would tear up the Italian league, even now. Pirlo wouldn't last a full season in the Premier League, he'd be back to Italy in January.

Not to take away from Pirlo that he has had a great career.

Play sterling..lallana..gerrard..hendo in the team and we stand a great chance of winning.

Ok, ok!

GB, so you just close Pirlo down...thats how you stop him. WOW!

I mean WOW! Top coaches for years have struggled to stop him and here you have it....close him down

Why are people talking about club form anyway? This is a world cup. And Gerrard hasn't come anywhere close to Pirlo at international level.

How can you say Gerrard would perform in Italy but Pirlo would fail in England?

Please explain, as my media tinted Pirlo goggles prevent me from knowing all you know.

-----------------------------

I remember when he played RB in the second half of the 2005 CL final, after being schooled by...Pirlo.

Gerrard is a good player, but I think international football is quite a good leveller in terms of seeing just how good an individual actually is. Having to play in a team of varying abilities, rather than hand-picked players of top quality at club level. Pirlo stands out. Gerrard does not. In fact it highlights that whilst we have the 'hardest, fastest league in the world' the English players are probably good at best.

Oh I forgot, all those top coaches in italy.....what is there, 3 or 4 . Didn't utd stick a player on him....and didnt utd win, comprehensively? ? Wow....it IS that easy!

Bingo!

Games will be played with the emphesis on possesion, games at slow tempos for large periods.

Why are you comparing United under Alex Ferguson to England under Roy Hodgson? The two are worlds apart.

As long as Gerrard doesn't start slipping at the wrong moment, or give the ball away cheaply like he did the last game. I've noticed that kind of sloppiness come into his game quite a bit this season at times.
