comment by Got_Better (U6241)posted 8 minutes agoI dont think you judge any player in the white of england; when players like scholes..lampard..gerrard..beckam..look ordinary then something is wrong, and its not the quality of those players.
Well Pirlo has dont it for Italy....the players you listed for.England, well they were good at club level but fell short. Unless it has been the 3-4 top italian league coaches
Apart from the Spanish mob no midfielder has had as big an impact on international tournaments in the last decade as Pirlo.
He could so easily have won the player of the tournament award for the 2006 World Cup & he was the best player two years ago as well.
Like I said earlier his performances in 2006 go under the radar, funny for someone who is according to some apparently overhyped in the aftermath of the England game.
Not a slant on Stevie. He's one of the greatest players to put on the red shirt, heavily involved in some of our greatest nights. I'm sure the vast majority of rival fans will say how a great a footballer he has been.
I just refuse to believe Gerrard or the vast majority for that matter would have been nearly as good as him in an Italy shirt. Never mind better.

Agreed, TGM.
It's no surprise Italy were so crap at the 2010 world cup when Pirlo was missing.
Darren,
Indeed, in fact I'm sure he came off the bench in their final game & they started to play quite well for the first time.
I think they did. Their defence wasn't all that in that world cup, however, as Cannavaro was past it.
"according to some apparently overhyped in the aftermath of the England game"
I just said that one performance is overhyped because we made it so easy for him, not him as a player or over a career. Both he as a player and his career are absolutely top class brilliant.
But if you asked him to name the tactics he's faced over his entire career that gave him a little happy wee of excitement and a full on stiffy he'd say that match. We custom tailored it for him to shine. Roy was a fecking idiot.
Thing is, that wasn't even his best game of the tournament. The semis against Germany was.
TKT,
That wasn't necessarily aimed at you, you did say earlier that you rated his career highly. Just more a general observation.
Perhaps that performance wasn't as great as some make out but then again his displays in 06, the Grosso pass semi-final, the man-of-the-match in the final go under the radar. He deserved the plaudits he eventually got.
Darren,
Yes, remarkable how bad they were all the same though.
he had a great tournament fullstop
He should have won player of the tournament, in my opinion. He was better than Iniesta.

Gerrard is a beast. He dragged liverpool from nowhere to win the champions league.
He and Pirlo are different players though and Pirlo is better as a deep playmaker. I don't understand the rubbishing of Gerrard though. He has been an immense player over the years and has scored some crackers. He is box to box but has adapted well this season. He isn't better in that role than Pirlo but he certainly isn't an inferior player. GB is right that Pirlo can't do alot of what Gerrard has done time and again.
Gerrard is my number 1 midfielder without a doubt. No other midfielder in the world has impressed me more then him. I hope he has a better tournament than rhis past season.
Gerrard is awesome....he has better assists and goals than pirlo the past season. We shouldnt worry about italy they should worry about us.
