golden goal

Also I think penalties are actually fair. Players know it can happen and have to train for it too.

Number of fouls committed / cards issued could be taken into consideration after 90 mins.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You may as well say the ref should judge who he thinks were the better team.
---------------------------------------------------------------

What about shots, shots on targets, passes completed, posession, corners? The ref has no control over that.

Sport is supposed to be harsh. There's winners and losers and harshness is just part of it.

So a team passes it around the back 4 for 90 minutes with the occasional 45 yard punt at goal and wins? Would be a victory for anti football.

What team has the best hairstyles wins?
That would be entertaining

It's ridiculous, hardly fairer than penalties.

I was discussing this same topic with my mate yesterday. He had a good idea. Instead of a shoot out, it will be like ice hockey where a player has to start from the midfield centre spot with the ball, and dribble to the keeper and try to score. So it will be a footballing solution instead of a static penalty shoot out. Rules are the same, best of 5 to win it.

Ok make only those stats that happened in the opposition half count.

That way teams wouldnt be able to sit in their own half and it would encourage attacking play

Don't see why that is any better than a penalty. Especially for knackered players who have just spent 120 minutes giving their all.

Why is there more skill in running 40 yards with the ball unchallenged before shooting than just shooting?

how about in the league - if its a draw game then each team gets 0 points.... therefore encouraging each team to push for the win that bit more ?

posted on 14/7/14

Chelsea would probably have lost the Champions League if it was decided on statistics.

Penalties are fair, I think people are trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist.

So a 3-3 draw where both teams go all out for victory is worth the same as a team who gets hammered 7-1?

no, because the team that loses 7-1 gets screwed on goal difference.

Goal difference is rarely a factor.

if you only award points for wins, then every team has a multiple of 3 points, meaning that it will be a much more common occurance for teams to be on the same points, meaning that goal difference is suddenly a far bigger consideration than it is in today's format......

Do you really have to ask? Its completely different as the keeper can get out of his goal to get the ball off the player. Or make is goal smaller. The player has to deal with that and it makes it harder to score. It is more down to skills, whereas a shoot out is a lottery.

I don't get why people hate penalties? I actually get more angry watching just under two hours of football and getting robbed of penalties at the death.

Penalties are exciting and give underdogs the chance of progression.
