Superb, is he agreeing with your idea or the idea in the OP...?
Isn't how a team has played over 90 minutes based on actual undisputable stats a much fairer way of judging who was the best team on the day ?
Or is sticking the ball on the spot and trying to whack it past the keeper a fairer way ?

So, 1-1 with ten minutes left. The team stats man has worked out your team are 49-51 down in possession, but level on corners. Do you go for goal, which ultimately loses you possession and is a big risk, or do you take the ball into the corner and increase your possession in the attacking third stats?
Or... It is 1-1, but you are down on number of corners. So your winger has the ball in a good crossing area, does he attempt to find his team mates in the box? No he plays it off the defender to win an all important corner for his teams stats.
Awful idea, IMO. Players celebrating because they have kept the ball in the oppositions half for two minutes, shirts being ripped off in joy at every corner won...

Oh Superbs idea is to finish the game on stats, that's stupid.

undisputable stats ?
Are they indisputable? or open to any interpretation you like?
Possession doesn't always tell the true story for example.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Eh ??
Are you saying that the possession stat is in dispute ??
Never heard that one before Galv.
Stats like possession, pass completion and shots on target are one of the very few things in a football match that cannot be disputed.
judging who was the best team on the day ?

Judging is for sports like ice Skating, synchronised swimming and horse dancing. This is football, where the team who puts the ball into the goal legally the most times wins the game. Simple as that. And if it takes a penalty shoot-out, so be it.

It just wouldn't work like that though.
When you are amalgamating that many factors and variables there would never be a point in a game where you could say if we win this corner then we win the game.
At least that is not how I would envisage it working.

As said above, it doesn't indicate you were the better team...rather that you kept the ball for longer....hardly groundbreaking to play keep ball.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
As I keep saying possession would be one of many stats that would be amalgamated.
It wouldn't just be case of who keeps the ball longest wins.
Most importantly as I said before these stats would only count when you are in the opposition half.
So just hogging the ball in your own half would count for nothing. As a result we'd see more attacking play.
So you think all draws are one sided, Superb? I would imagine a lot of draws would be very close in the stats you are talking about, wherein a couple of pot shots from the half way line that happen to be on target could decide who wins in your system.

No I never said all draws are one sided.
The shots on target one is the only stat that could be abused because teams could just keep shooting at goal.
Admittedly that specific area might require more thought and limitation or even left out of the stat amalgamation process altogether.

Having said that teams that keep taking pot shots at goal would have less possession as a result of constantly giving away the ball and their pass stats would also be compromised.
So in that respect it wouldn't benefit a team to do that in this process.
If a game ends drawn then the tv companies should hold a text in vote.
Easy.
I really cannot imagine sitting through 90 minutes of a game that ends in a draw and then seeing one team awarded the game based on stats. Would be truly awful, especially if the game had been an enthralling one with goals, and good attacking play from each side.
Plus, would both teams have to look up to the scoreboard to see who won?
Or would the stats scoreboard be live? Or kept from eyes on the pitch?
---------------------------
Give me a sec here Galv. I just invented the wheel, now you want me to build you a Ferrari
In all seriousness though I haven't thought about that.
I don't really like the live stats scoreboard though as it would stop players focussing 100% on the game.
