Good Will Hunting is blatantly original though.
I'd also include very clever plot ideas, especially something you just never see coming, like Arrival for example (aside from the technology aspect).

what's original about the story??
i just don't get it.
you mean because nobody had done a film before about a janitor who was super clever??
you need more than that to be original.
if goodwill hunting is the example of 90s originality, then it doesn't say much for the 1990s!
so an innovative decade in film making is one where lots of films were made with stories that hadn't been done before
fk me. 1144 pages for this
But there’s no book, it came from the minds of Ben and Matt. It’s an original story.
Ok ok, let’s flip it, what would you say were the Original films of the 90s fam?

yes, and I'm saying an original screenplay is not enough by itself to constitute original film making.
when i talk about 60s being the decade of originality I'm not saying that they didn't make all that many remakes. i find it unbelievable that you guys - with all the knowledge of and love for film that you have - can not appreciate this point.
in terms of the 90s, not many. that's what i've been saying though.
Probably:

There, I’ve said it.
What’s going on here? I leave for a bit and come back and Bill is
• equating the freedom to make films as the filmmakers want to getting nudez n swearin
• stating films can only be original if they meet his criteria
• hating on films because people have heard of them
• dissing the thread because of the conversation
This is a no judgement place of operations bro.
I'll explain why Vive L'Amour is original (and you can derive from that why Good Will Hunting is not original)...

I disagree.
So Vive L'Amour / Long Live Love is a Taiwanese film.
I don't know why it's known by the French translation of the title but it is.
It's original and innovative on numerous grounds:
1. It's a landmark in the slow cinema movement. Possibly the first piece of great slow cinema. Slow cinema has very little plot development, but still keeps the viewer riveted and/or amused.
2. Its use of dialogue. In the first hour there's no dialogue between characters at all. The only voices are a couple of fairly abstract phone calls, where you just hear one end of the call, or one piece of throwaway speech from a sales agent explaining the good points of a property to a viewer (whose voice you don't hear). It's done so cleverly you barely notice.
3. part of the plot is a gay romance. unusual for 1994 and done very subtly. again in fact, you hardly notice.
4. the ending, with the viewer alone with emotions of one of the characters
5. the briliant plot. now i will compare here to good will hunting. vive l'amour's plot is very very simple, but very clever. it's 3 people living in a small apartment without knowing the others are there. it's ingenious. compare that to GWH: a really clever janitor works in a university and he's cleverer than the really clever professor. wowwee. and more....the professor has had a touch life, and so has the janitor, but the prof teaches him some life lessons and gets him through. incredible. it's a story, but there's nothing special about it. it's not 3 people living in a flat without knowing the others are there.
6. the brilliant execution of the plot. the perfect choreoography. the use of silence.
that is innovation and originality.
