Bill, if you're definition of an original movie doesn't include an original story or script, then it's a definition that most people on this thread do not adhere to.

compare that to GWH: a really clever janitor works in a university and he's cleverer than the really clever professor. wowwee. and more....the professor has had a touch life, and so has the janitor, but the prof teaches him some life lessons and gets him through. incredible. it's a story, but there's nothing special about it.
----
It's an ORIGINAL story. Regardless of what you think of the quality
----------------------------------------------------------------------
well it isn't really, it's a story about someone being inspired by someone else, which is as old as the hills.
but regardless, do you not see the difference between a story and a clever story, or a story which requires innovative telling?
if you aren't prepared to see that there's more to developing an art, or taking an art in an innovative direction, than simply doing something which isn't exactly the same as something someone else has done, then you will continue to miss the point.
no film maker is going to be inspired to experiment or innovate by the plot or the execution of good will hunting. there's nothing creative about it at all.

By your logic you could say there are no original movies, and SW is the same as Dead Poet's Society.
The actual quality of the movie doesn't come into it, although it's worth pointing out they won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay......
Let's do a different thing then.
Which decade has the most movies where people haven't already made exactly the same movie in exactly the same way before?
Maybe that's more interesting to people.
No no let's argue some more.
We haven't got to the petty name-calling phase yet!

It did win Best Original Screenplay.
The other nominations were:
As Good as It Gets
Boogie Nights
Deconstructing Harry
The Full Monty
I think Boogie Nights should have won from those personally. But then again, they were all original, so maybe it should have been a tie.

Palm Springs (2020), is a romcom in which the protagonists are trapped in a time loop and wake up with every day the same day.
It's got more originality in its pinkie finger than Good Will Hunting has in its entire being.

I wouldn't disagree
For me personally I attach substantial significance to it, and it can create brilliance.
But I agree with you. A movie doesn't have to be original to be a great movie, and an original movie can be crap.
If originality never happened though, we wouldn't have the history of film that we do have, and we wouldn't have the unoriginal movies that are made today.

I thought it was ok, decent and watchable. I didnt think it was particularly original in its writing and the comedy was very much a copy and paste for Andy Samberg (who i am a big fan of).
For me it was a 6/10 decent enough, slightly above average.

Maybe I went in a bit hard on it, but I still think that's harsh. It's a must see on Metacritic, which takes some doing.
I like Empire's review, "It’s taken a long time getting here from across the Pond, but some things are worth waiting for. A wonderful, witty and weird spin on an old favourite, which seems destined to become a classic itself."
