You plan for the season not just the next game, that's why you use the squad. We're reliant on Sturridge because he's one of the best strikers in the league, when fully fit.
The two further away trips should have been the ones we played the youth in.
Had we beaten bordeaux and won the next two the trip to Russia would be almost irrelevant, and the fringe players could have gone to leave the first teamers fit
As it is, we have just built up the pressure on that tie. Better to get qualified early in my opinion..
"So why are we so reliant on Sturridge's return to salvage our season?"
I find the answer to this one very simple.
Players of Sturridge's quality simply do not want to join an 'average' (what we get called nowadays) club like Liverpool. All the others of his type of quality have left other than Coutinho and his role isn't to score most weeks, he's more an orchestrator.
So he's crucial. A proper top class forward who hasn't been sold yet.

So we are happily writing off ings original and firmino already?

If we were capable of attracting players proven to be as good as Sturridge then I'd agree. But we aren't even if we offer the right money, they still don't sign.
we're in a pickle lads.
Not fatigue but tiredness is what I meant. Fatigue would be more effected by number of games rather than when they are played I would say. Playing 2 highly intense matches in 4 days would have some sort of an impact. At the very least it's because Rodgers knows he's on the last chance saloon and wants a fully fresh team as he's bricking himself.
And i agree. I'm annoyed that Rodgers went and built a team and then comes out saying 'we'll be better when studge is back' It's one of the many reasons I'm losing patience with him.

Nearly every team relies on one top striker United Chelsea do arsenal don't even have one, city even with all the players they have still rely on agureo to be at their best, Spurs have Kane etc.
Every team struggles without their best goal scorer and its not some massive deal that we rely on Studge to make a big difference to our season

"But man for man, we still have one of the best squads in the league. Certainly better than the likes of West Ham, Leicester and Crystal Palace, yet they are consistently performing much better than us."
I think that's on Rodgers
The man's got flaws.

they were brought in to strengthen the side and replace Borini, Balotelli and Lambert.
I don't think any one of them or combination of them had an expectation of being as good as Studge.

Well no, but it's clearly going to take time to integrate them, especially Firmino. You're putting words into people's mouths and making things up. You're having a mare really....

disagree hes having a mare.
All have pace and movement, rodgers stubbornness in playing them will cost him, he needs to pick the players for the formation, not choose which players he wants to use then see how they fit together on the pitch.

"Why spend circa £60m (depending on the Ings tribunal) on 3 squad players when the first team fell well short of its targets last season?"
because we have the money and that's the level of quality we can attract.

I think Firmino is going to be ace, we're just suffering under Brodge's tactical stubbornness for now.

Is it really that bad?
