The club are signing xyz
The club is in trouble.
Guess it's about participles.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yet, for me, if you replace 'The club' in both of those with the name of the club - they both become 'are'.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oddly true
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No, not true. The club (by name or reference) is a single entity so it would be, for example, "Liverpool / The Club IS signing XYZ" vs "We ARE signing XYZ"...
How many people (apart from possibly Ali G) have you heard say "Liverpool is signing Suarez"
Only an absolute spacmong would feel opposed to saying 'we'.

I don't often refer to Utd as we. I think i used to when I went to games and felt I had more of a personal affiliation to the club.
Probably a mixture of being unable to make the games so much, age and perspective.

Football has only recently become business oriented. A huge influx of money and rampant commercialism has meant a shift from a local community based supportership to a more global fanbase.
I have and will always use "Us"/"We" when referring to Arsenal because they aren't just some company that I happen to like, they are an establishment with which I have a serious and deep-rooted affinity.
Just my two cents.
I am going to sit on the fence here. While I agree that "we" is perfectly normal as you may feel an affinity with a club it also seems strange grouping yourself with players you don't actually know.
So what if you play for a Sunday league side and someone asks you on Monday, "did you win at the weekend?" do you answer "yes WE did" (WE as in your teammates) or "yes WE did" (We being the players you don't know).
Definitely "we".
This reminds me of my first year of uni. I was in halls with another Arsenal fan who grew into my best friend and we'd watch a lot of games. One of our housemates wasn't really a football fan but would name Liverpool as her club because of her boyfriend. As the year wore on she'd sit in with us for a lot of games out of boredom, though she'd still claim that she was a- not a football fan and b- if she was she was a Liverpool one. Around February she came into the room and asked "how are we doing?" I point to that moment as the point that we got her.
"We" and "us" is about identifying with the team. It's not delusional to use those pronouns.
Sometimes I use "we" sometimes I use "United" There is a camp C people, come and join me. We aren't restricted to one set or linguistic rules. Viva La Revolution!
I have this rule.
If I am speaking with someone for the first time I will call us (as in United) United.
Once we (the person I am speaking with and I) have established who I support I then refer to United as 'we' and 'us'. No problem with that IMO.
Whether we (JA606 posters) will agree entirely on this I don't know but I would think we (JA606 posters) are seeing which way this is going and I am sure that is good enough for us (JA606 posters).

No I have not! We fans of us should stick together!
Interestingly Queen Victoria popularised the usage of"we". She included Albert in all her decisions even after his death.
The French use it when thinking positively.
Is it not a question of preference? No one way is right or wrong. If speaking to a group of comrades the "we " feels right because we all like to belong. In football we become even more tribal. So oui oui has the ayes!
