It would appear that immigration has benefits but the brexiters choose to ignore those and would rather spout inaccuracies and lies to scare people into voting leave.

Of course immigration is needed. It's not about stopping it, it's about reducing it to sensible levels that the country can cope with.
But if we do leave there's going to be WWIII which will reduce the number of people anyway - so I guess it's a win win situation?

I would freely admit to working to persuade people to vote to stay in because I am (literally) afraid of what might happen if we leave.

It will potentially have a massive and (in my eyes) terrible impact on my life, on the lives of some of my friends in similar situations, and on others in many different ways.

If you judge, as I do, the net impact to the people of the continent to be overwhelmingly negative, fear is a rational response.

That's not a bad analogy for things like the NHS actually. If by some magic, Brexit works and immigration falls through the floor, what are the government going to blame for wrecking public services next? The poor? The elderly? The seeds are already being sown there anyway.
