By the way, there was an events at the Spanish FA to award this year's coaching badges today.
Raúl, Xabi Alonso, Xavi, Valdés, Marcos Senna and Capdevila amongst those who are no manager material.

None of those managers have managed the very biggest clubs so it’s hard to say what they do or don’t need. They work they way they do because they’ve had to.
Look at Pellegrini for example and once he got the top jobs his team clicked pretty much straight away, albeit didn’t win the league because of Pep’s Barca.
It can take a little longer than that as even Mourinho didn’t win La Liga until his second season, so there are no guarantees, but better players tend to get a coaches methods working quicker than lesser players, which is what these ‘project managers’ have had to work with.
They can also drag a team through games even when those methods aren’t actually working that well also.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe, hard to tell. I think managers who rely on players work-rate and coaching, more than tactical nous require more longevity in a role though? I guess it is hard to tell, but it appears to be the tacticians who make it to the very top traditionally.
But there’s a difference between having some depth issues in certain positions and needing a squad/first team overhaul. I just don’t agree with that.
I don’t think they even need a cm. They’ve got one of the most highly rated young midfielders in Spain in Cabellos who cannot even get a game such is there strength there.
Maybe they do, but the quality of player can accelerate the process, as it does with any type of manager.
I think the dealing with egos and being able to rotate and keep harmony in the squad is the biggest skill needed to manage Madrid, as Zidane has shown. So in that sense I agree that Pochettino probably isn’t the best fit.
If Madrid don’t go down the big name manager route I actually think the next coach will be given some time anyway providing there’s not a complete balls up.
Perez seems to have changed his approach somewhat with regard to how he’s run Madrid so I could see that happening.
On a completely unrelated note, I enjoy reading Heynckes wikipedia cos I honestly have no clue of him as a manager.
Won the CL for RM in 95 for the first time in 29 years, finished 11 points behind Barca so he got sacked so savage

I dunno, I'd class the likes of Poch/Klopp/Simeone etc as managers who require more time for success than your Conte/Mourinho/Ancellottis of this world. Which was more of the point, I don't think RM would give Poch time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Simeone won his first title with Atleti within 6 months.
Klopp reached a final (or two) I think.
But Poch, yeah. Might need half a dozen years or so.

was '98 against Juve in Amsterdam Arena
Atleti would probably be a better fit for Pochettino if what we are discussing is true.
But I’d hazard a guess that he’d opt for Real over Atletico.
Tbf Simeone was a rogue shout, wasn't sure who the third in the example would be as I didnt want to go for Sarri or Jardim based on not knowing their history as well.

We'd qualified for that CL as Liga champions under Capello, who was sacked.
The football under both was sch*te, tbh.
Highly doubtful RM would hire Poch, too much of a gamble tbh
yeah was a v poor league season 97/98....all made up for though by winning our first european cup in over 30 years
Almost forgot. Hiddink was only brought in as an emergency replacement.
After sacking Heynckes we'd actually signed Camacho but he resigned before a ball had been kicked over disagreements with chairman Lorenzo Sanz.
Jardim’s a weird one in that it wasn’t exactly a long project that came to fruition. Just excellent signings and coaching. Look at the squad he had when he first went to Monaco and the one that won the league. They are very different.
Reading up on Camacho on wiki and it says he was sacked after like 2 games in 2004 after?

Don't really know much about Jardim tbh. All I remember is going to the Lane to watch us play Monaco the season before and we demolished them with Lamela bagging a brace (I think). Then the next season they smashed us in the CL and went on to win the league.
Hiddink last until Feb, got sacked and was replaced by Toshack.
We won nothing, but Toshack was given the next season, who only lasted until the end of November.
Del Bosque was brought in from the reserve side and lost his first game 1-5 to Zaragoza.
He was won of our own and won the CL though, so that summer the chairman resigned.
I think it’s hard to judge his time at Monaco as their scouting system and academy are grate. A few years ago I watched quite a few of their games and followed their results and some of the football was pretty defensive at times. Got a lot of 1-0 wins. I thought it made sense why he was being touted as the next Mourinho. Then at other times they were playing grate stuff and scoring for fun. Seems to change things to suit what’s at his disposal, which I suppose is impressive and necessary given the turnover of players at Monaco. Would like to see him in the prem, even at United. He may just have got lucky with that group of players that one season or he might be the real deal.
I really want to see that Shakthar manager Fonesca in the PL as apparently he is quite an exciting and progressive manager. Would be nice to see him go to a Watford level club or equivalent.
Apparently he turned down West Ham.
Oh really? I thought their first and second choices were Pellegrini and Benitez? (Emery apparently being third is a massive lol)
